What exactly does Accent do?

So as the title says, is there any more information about the behaviour of the Accent function on the sequencer? The manual just states that it affects the “volume and filter envelope behaviour”, but what does that actually mean?

Of course the most important bit is that it sounds good, but I’d still be interested the specifics, especially if there are limitations for its use. For example if it’s affecting the volume, should I keep the volume in the AMP page low to get the most out of accenting?

Well, aren’t you nosey! What exactly does Low Life do?

I guess I had that coming

But to answer your question, for a living I do ASIC design, on my free time I play video games and mess about with synthesizers

From what I can tell, the accent ‘spikes’ resonance. In essence -a small resonance-only envelope. If you turn up the accent amount, the resonance level increases (to a point) as well as adds time to how long the envelope is open.

It does seem fairly ‘limitation proof’ to me though - as far as an accent sound. If I recall correctly, lowering the volume wouldn’t have a dramatic increase on the sound of the accent. It would just bring everything down. Don’t let that stop you from experimenting though - as all my thoughts are from memory.

I did a bit of testing last night, and after cranking up everything I could think of that increases volume accenting still made the sound louder so there don’t seem to be any limitations in that sense.

Having a fully open filter it (quite naturally) didn’t seem to change the tone of the sound unless I set the envelope depth negative - it actually sounded pretty cool with that!

The Accent works similarly to the TB-303. At certain settings, it creates a “whao” effect on Accented notes.

You can hear it here in this track:

It depends on the amount of Accent, filter env amount and cutoff.

Also mess around with the velocity modulation parameters in the track setup screen. The accent essentially bumps the velocity, so you can make it do whatever you want (well, within the scope of modulating 5 synth parameters).

That’s a rad track Area303! ACID! I had to plug my laptop into my stereo is was grooving so hard.

Huh. I’ll check it out!
