What did you make? DIY stand, desks, racks, etc

Just an Ikea wooden plate placed on top of some pioneer speakers, no screws needed

I’m starting to think about building a studio desk. I’ll have to look at the IKEA tops that don’t bend in the middle over time.

Seeing an MPC 5000 front and center is a rare sight these days!

I went to a local carpenter and had a 22mm birch plywood board cut to size using a CNC machine. I then built a base for rack equipment under the monitor, oiled the board, and placed it on my small desk.

It was relatively easy to implement, and I’m very pleased with the result.

Oh nice! I was thinking of using butcher block for the top. I haven’t decided yet. That would probably be too thick, but I’ve had so many table tops bow on me from the weight.

I bought a 5th leg and put it in the middle right in front of where my monitor arm clamp sits on the table because it was starting to bow…

Makes sense. I ride that one one but the top was so flimsy it still didn’t work. Plus I want my Model 2400 on the able along with the dual computer monitors and audio monitors. It’s gonna be a lot of weight. Haha!

Built this a while ago. Don’t have any of the gear anymore, but I still have the shelf!

Ooo! I like the leg placement!

This is why I stopped building custom stuff! Have all these home made stands and enclosures collecting dust as I moved on or upgraded gear!

You can always affix a length of 1"x1" across the bottom back of the top to keep it from bowing. I had to do that for my pantry shelves.

The tops I have now are shitty hollow particle board or I would.

Gotta get that good Ikea particle board!

(FWIW, I think butcher’s block sounds awesome but in my experience it can be hard to work with because it’s so chunky… all my kitchen counters are butchers block. I guess as long as you’re keeping things rectilinear it shouldn’t be that bad. It polishes up real nice though with just a little bit of mineral oil. No staining or coating or anything needed!)

Yeah, I’ve built and installed many butcher block countertops and shelves in my day. It’s a pain, but it’ll last. Thankfully I have the tools and the skills to do it. Being a carpenter has its perks.

Oh yeah, the butchers block counters in my kitchen have taken 10 years of abuse and are still going strong. I’m actually kind of shocked by how well they’ve stood up, given how badly I’ve treated them.
