The knobs on my Moogerfoogers (specifically the MF104M and MF108M) are super. Perfect match of chunky size, and smooth but firm resistance.
The aesthetically identical knobs on my MF104SD and Slim Phatty have nowhere near the same satisfying heft.
Honorable mention also to the monome arc.
Not sure if these count as knobs? Dials maybe?
But I never tire of playing with these. Some times will just destress by rotating them gently even if not plugged in. Like ice skating with your fingertips.
My favorite knobs were on the Minitaur and Sirin. The Pro 3 giant cutoff knob was great too (the others were way too stiff). I’ve since sold them all though!
I prefer a bit of resistance. Whichever pots WMD, Mannequins, and Pittsburgh Modular uses feel nice. Vermona and Moog knobs are good n chunky. Gibson Speed or Carvin metal knurled on the git fiddles, but I’m probably in the minority there. Encoders - Nord G2/L3 with LED rings.
Interesting this, I was trying to describe this sense of satisfaction from just turning a piece of metal/plastic in OP. There’s probably some deep psychology behind it!
Strangely I don’t get the same from modular tweaking - not yet anyway. I think I’m scared of breaking all those expensive modules, more fragile looking than desktop gear!
Nord Rack 2, Micro Modular and NM G1k all share the same pots and have small diameter knobs with a nice tactile feel, clear indication and an unbeatable connection with the sound, good weight to teh resistance but not too firm - those stand out for me
also a thumbs up for the og boss ones (my first boss pedal was a first batch BF2) which were broader and serated with an orange marker, those were also very positive to touch although looked dated compared to the slimmer smooth ones which soon followed - turning always felt connected
worst feel probably on the Korg MS20 mini - or Blofeld, not to do with the firmware, but the lack of texture
the Elektron knobs feel good on pots, but the software gearing with encoders can be abysmal on some devices, utterly unusable if quick accuracy is important - functionally flawed is arguably the worst scenario come to think of it … awkward!
i quite like the arturia pots/encoders and their faceted knobs
favourite looking scheme and knob layout would be on the B Pro-1 as it’s a nod to the og which is a timeless look imho - those Pro-1 pots are similar to the boss ones above and are also super clear, feel good too
I like the look of the knobs on my Moog Grandmother but they don’t feel as nice as those on my Toraiz AS-1, those are super-smooth, nice looking knobs that are clearly marked (I guess probably similar to other DSI/Sequential synths, though I haven’t used any). I think those are my favourite; I just wish it had more of them!
I’d agree with that – the pots on the AH feel lovely but the encoders on a lot of the other machines aren’t all that great.
The pots on the Bogner pedals have a really nice feel and resistance to turn. Whenever I use them I just fiddle with knobs for a bit. Satisfying Same deal with the volume knob on the RNHP.
The knob aint enough by itself you gotta take the shaft into consideration!
Every Moog I’ve owned has had really nice pots and knobs. I’ve bought in some bourns pots for a DIY synth and they were the smoothest pots I’ve came across. Really expensive but absolutely top class.
