After looking at various 2/3-tier stands (for example Jaspers) and realising their too deep to sit nicely between my studio table and the wall, I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to mount some rails onto the walls and go looking for shelves that can be tilted at an angle to allow the mounted synths to be played comfortably.
This feels like a DIY project even I can handle, but would like to hear ideas/thoughts from people who’ve done something similar. Maybe there’s a shelf you’d recommend (in the EU)?
The synths I’m looking to mount start with a Prophet 6 I’m hoping to score in the next couple of weeks and would love to have the space for it ready before it arrives.
Still also interested in stands that can be fit behind a table standing about 30 cm from the wall at the height of about 90 cm.
There are plenty of shelving options available. The rails that screw to the wall with clip in arms for mounting shelves are good (if you’ve got straight walls!). Sounds obvious but check the total load you intend to put on the shelves… some can look very substantial but when you read the spec they are strictly light duty. Another option is a free standing shelving unit. These tend to be a bit more industrial in appearance but usually have a higher loading capacity.
If you’ve got some large or bulky gear and are happy to have it in one spot you could even buy a pair of cantilever Unistrut arms. They’d fix straight to a wall (preferably brick/block) and I’d strongly advise suitable fixings like rawlbolts but once it’s up you can put heavy loads on them without worry. Unistrut is fantastic stuff and can support huge weights such as control panels, air con units, pumping skids…all sorts really. Prob overkill for a single synth but maybe you dig that industrial aesthetic
I haven’t done this so I don’t know if tilt-able shelves are available for this type of system. I use the free-standing wire-rack shelving type of system that @Bunker describes though, and just put wooden blocks underneath the synths as needed. usually, just a 2"x4" which is roughly 20% shorter than the synth’s length, so it’s invisible. with most synths, their front “feet” will keep them secured from sliding forwards/falling. the feet sort of lock into one of the gaps between the wiring on the shelf.
The idea is to have two shelves for now. At least the upper one would need to be tilted to allow a (relatively) comfortable playing angle. I don’t expect the upper synth to be at a height/angle where I’d noodle on it for hours on end.
This might actually be just what I need - and without the need to go to Ikea, ha! Thanks for the suggestion! I actually saw that when browsing Thomann for stands but somehow ignored it thinking it’s yet another floor stand.
From the looks of it it would comfortably fit the Octatrack between the feet / under the base, perhaps even OT AND Heat.
Cool. Glad to help. Keep in mind when buying that each part is sold seperately and that the two tiers have different sizes. To build the setup in the picture you need five products: the bar for table standing, two different sized rizers and (optional) two different sized (depth) cover plates.
I have my DN, AH and A4 mki on one level and it is just a bit too wide, but doable.
