It seems like on mine the protector is somehow stuck on the screen. Fuck.
I will contact the shop I got it from and ask them to swap it to a unit with removable film.
For anyone else possibly wondering about the matte screen having possibly a protection film on it, theyāve made the with glossy and matte screens.
As mine got scratched by me trying to remove the film I thought was on the screen they will send me a new plastic for the screen, which is nice.
Vladi has posted new DSP firmware, mostly performance-related.
Sounds like more will follow soon including fixing the sync over DIN, but apparently fixing the sync over USB might not be possible/practical.
Thanks for that! I hope weāre finally getting to the end of the update cycle for this beast, all bugs squashed (except the USB sync fix, which as you said doesnāt seem likely now).
Are you running FW 1.09, from the Waldorf site? Any reason to avoid it? Looks like Host 1.09 is needed to try the DSP 1.10 beta that Vladi just offered in your post above⦠I think Iām still back on a later 1.08 Host and DSP firmware that Vladi had posted at Gearspace, I never put in the official Waldorf 1.09ā¦
Not that Iām aware of, not sure if you can skip firmware versions either or if you have to incrementally upgrade via every version since Iāve just been doing that as theyāve been released. The whole DSP/host thing does muddy the waters a little bit there I suppose.
Thanks for the heads up. Iām not sure about having to load every version ⦠Iāve mostly used Vladiās betas from GS, so I was on some version of 1.07, replaced by several versions of 1.08.
Itās definitely important to make sure that the DSP firmware version is matched up with the particular Host firmware version that Vladi or Waldorf specify, and sometimes (as in this case) the two correct FWs have different version numbers from each other.
Just snagged the last M from Andertonās for Ā£1270! Price seemed too good to ignore. So excited!
Iām really considering adding the 8 voice expansion to my M as I love layering voices in multimode and those extra 8 would really open things up⦠The install looks simple enough. Anyone with real world experience with the expansion in terms of bugs specifically with the added voice module? I donāt really use transitions a ton (I know they can be an issue in layered voices), and the sync issues donāt really bother me (hopefully those get resolved with the next UI/version update).
I donāt have the expansion but am not sure how well the M would handle 8 more voices. I can already easily overload both the analog signal path (itās easy to overload the output) as well as the dsp with only 8 voices. I would be curious to know how it handles 16 voices as well.
From a Gearspace thread-
Amazing for industrial / EBM style sequenced basses. Even though people think of the MW2 as the āultimate evolving pads machineā, Iāve never used it for that and I never will. Attack time zero at all times!
Wonder how much the Waldorf M can approximate, anyone opinions on snappiness of the 2/XT model?
Well, it looks like maybe Korg USA is no longer working with Waldorf? The expansion board is no longer available on their reverb shop and I donāt see any Waldorf products available there. I kind of regret not just grabbing that board as it seems like something that probably wonāt be available again any time soon.
I almost entirely used mine in the MW2/XT mode. The extra filters and bit crusher were far more interesting to me than than the MW1 mode. (which is still incredibly nice!) I just prefer the sound and features of the MW2 mode. While it does lack a bit of XT features, and isnāt quite as immediate to use as an XT, it comes close enough to the tone and feel of it, that I felt quite at home (as a many-times over XT/XT-30/XTk user). The M is quite the synth. Iād love to pick up another one at some point. Not sure I have room right now though, and also have the Pro-3 for a bit of that wave table thing in the meantime. The only thing that I found myself wishing with the M is that the filters had been implemented a bit more fully. (Passband attenuation compensation and linearlized resonance.) They still sound fantastic, but I feel like they could have been just a touch nicer with those features. Itās definitely in my top N synths list. (however many that might be )
Thank you! At this stage Iām definitely coming to terms with what engages my brain as much as my earholes, and it sounds as if the M meets just enough of the sound while the usability will be vastly improved over the OG MWs.
I would say that the usability is roughly on par with the XT. So deep, some menus, but largely panel based synthing. There are some things that are better than the XT. I like the panel layout overall, the screen is nicer and gives you more information, and the analog filters definitely add a bit of that MW1/Wave style sound to it. IMO the resonance comes on a bit to rapidly, but carefully dialing gets around that. (just could have better with linearization as I mentioned above) Overall though, if youāve ever been at home on ANY Waldorf, this thing will make perfect sense to you, and is a lot of fun to play. While you can get completely insane on it, I didnāt find what I would call a bad sound on it. (except some of the presets⦠) Itās definitely fun to dig into, and quite rewarding to do so.
its been interesting to see some people over at gearspace are āunder drivingā the filter now to get more of the resonant response they wanted, I think keeping oscillators below 30 or something in that range. But yea you can squeeze a fair amount of range out of the filters resonant response with gainstaging⦠I kind of thought the choice of no compensation made some sense on a wavetable synth as you can do resonant sweep type stuff with wavetables also. I agree though when it is driven there isnāt much range before it goes crazy on the resonance.
I got the waldorf Q Rack recently and I have to say it is a great counter point to it, I hope waldorf comes back to the Q at some point giving it an equal treatment that they gave the M. I know iridium exists but I dunno there is something to the Q. I read the osc are modeled after the Pulse so maybe that has something to do with it.
I love the Q! Nice pairing!
New Waldorf distributor for U.S. announced:
So no more Korg USA.
I think they made a great choice ditching korg in this regard. Probably going to be better prices and service for everyone in the US.
Although the description of the new distributers as: account executives, industry thought leaders, subject matter experts, marketing veterans, etc. still doesnāt sound that great. Does give me an idea for what to say when someone asks what I do for a job: āIām a thought leader and subject matter expertā.
Yeah, that was my first thought too ⦠as you may have seen, my post was initially nastier about Korg USAās performance, then I cut the bile out.
Thanks, Iāve got no reason to believe any corporation/distributor is all-good but there are wayyyyy too many āarmchair CEOsā and cargo cult grievances on other forums, appreciate the self-awareness and any reasons for less of that here
Happy theyāll have a better deal regardless.
