Thank you @metalfalcon and @bwo, it’s well appreciated!
Hello, anyone had a go at loading in their own short samples (or transformations in PPG Waveterm speak)? Are they just one shots or can they be looped? I’m trying to see if my M will do what I quite fancy an Emax for (simple poly sampler with nice analogue filters).
Yes, you can loop samples but it’s not a replacement for an emax, it’s quite clumsy and limited, more of an extra flavor to add to m patches than anything approaching an actual sampler.
The Hydrasynth is very versatile and this very aspect of it does not exactly make it a sweet spot synth. That’s perfectly ok if you master your sound design business, which I don’t. There are some great sounds you can get out of it, provided you’re patient. I suppose the M might be a bit more of a specialist and therefore easier to dial in.
The only worries that I had about HS was its durability: the LED lights and the many screens are amazing for sound design but I’m afraid at the same time that this might be its Achilles heel.
yeah better to just live with the kind of funky looping in it, there is no cross fade loop on them, and finding exact loop points isn’t super easy. They are easy to load in from the SD card, can’t remember the exact specs of the samples but I’ve been using all the old waveterm ones and they add a lot to the sound of the synth but I’m not sure it is the feature one would buy it for. With some programs you can also resynth a sample as a wavetable if you want more flexibility with what you can do to it but some of the character will get lost.
Thanks - to be fair the Emax is a bit clunky and limited too these days, as well as huge. I hope that if I do get one, the years of using an ESI32 will be dug up from my memory and help a bit.
Thanks, looks like I’ll need to prep them a bit. I’m only looking to use short samples of my other gear, raw oscs, that kind of thing. I recall it was 16 bit mono, possibly 32khz.
man… there’s an M on Reverb for $1k right now. crazy! how did this synth get so devalued in such a short time? it’s worth WAY more than that. and I’m not at all mad that I spent more.
I think it has to do with the Waldorf price adjustments. When it was launched, it was around $2500 in the US, but if you ordered from certain European retailers, you could get it for around $1500. Recently Waldorf has been lowering the prices and/or having sales in the US. I think I saw some US retailers selling them for around $1500 in the US at one point. That is still a very good price Reverb, but probably reflective of the buyer getting a good deal when they bought one new.
gotcha! thanks for the insight. I haven’t been following the retail prices and trends on them. just enjoying mine
I’ve had mine for a year and only used it for two hours. Man having a backlog of synths can be stressful. I really need to practice with this digital monster.
Careful with too good to be true deals, for they could also be fraud.
Yeah, over the last year too I’ve noticed a lot of deals that look too good to be true, by sellers that have zero feedback and are from other countries.
I don’t know if the prices have been adjusted in Canada but those prices have been there for more than a month now.
I am tempted to get one of these. I’ve read about problems with (red) encoders failing. Has this been a problem for anyone here? I hate gear that breaks/fails, really bothers me. Love the sounds I’ve heard in demos though.
In my defense I had too many THC gummies when I posted that comment.
I have read about this too, but can say, I have used mine quite a lot, and never had any issues with any of the encoders.
And the sound IRL is actually even better than the demos btw! It really is an gorgeous sounding synth!
In that case I’ll just unspit out my coffee.
Sounds worth the remote “risk” tbh.
