Volume Management - FX chain

How to keep volume consistent down an FX bus?

I’m using Infiltrator on bus track, in Ableton - have dry/wet built as a chain selector.

Some of the Infiltrator presets are really loud, when compared to the dry chain.

So I’m looking for a way of managing this difference. I can’t simply modify the presets, as they are factory and you can’t save them modified. Can’t save in user bank, only 128 slots.

I’ve tried putting a compressor as a limiter (Peak, inf:1), tried various release times, but it either distorts or kills the sound in some way.

Any help appreciated!

Use a limiter. Also Infiltrator 2 has a built in limiter now though I’m not sure if it stays on between presets.

Cheers!

I forgot Ableton has an actual limiter… been using a compressor on infinity to do it.

I’ll give it a go with Abletons stock limiter. Really hope I can get there!

Ah…

Remembered why I can’t use stock limiter, you can’t take of the lookahead.

I don’t want even the 1.5ms latency addition - I’m playing live and don’t want to add unnecessary latency to the sound.

Gonna keep trying!

There is color limiter which has no lookahead. It’s been available since Live Suite 10 but in a separate (free) download.

That being said, this video says specifically that a use case for the built in limiter is to make sure all the presets are within the same level and you should be able to use switch presets with the built in limiter.

What about dropping a Utility on there and lowering the gain?

Holy shit, just seen this is new in 2.5! I really need to check updates more often. Downloading now, I reckon this is the way to do it. Many thanks!

The problem is, some presets cause a big volume increase, some not at all. And I’m switching them in real-time, often punching in different presets as punch-in FX.

So the volume ends up being all over the place!

Seems like they knew this was an issue and fixed it already in the latest version. All good!

Yeah, that update was specifically designed for you lol.

Glad I could point you to it.

Bloody lazy bastards… they didn’t even bother to sent me an email about it, after correctly predicting in advance that I needed it fixed!

Seriously though, thanks for that. It works well now. Have to make sure you’re hitting the plugin pretty hard with signal, then it works nicely!
