Visiting Tokyo in January

Hey!

So I’m going to have an opportunity to spend a weekend plus a day in Tokyo early next year.

I’m wondering if anyone here has some visitor tips! Obviously this is the Elektronauts forum, and yes I’m interested in hitting up synth shops and the like. But they can be regular tourist tips too! Anything goes.

What would you do with 3 nights in Tokyo?

I was there last year. It’s the best. For synth shop visit 5G. It is also in that crazy shopping area.

Ow and go the ghibly museum if you’re into that

Besides synth stuff, what else are you into? Toys/video games/quirky/books/culture/views/booze?..

you dont really have to do anything in tokyo. just walk around. its fab

Harajuku:
Five G synth shop
Walk into park and find Meiji Jingu shrine, peaceful
Check out the crazy cosplayers on the bridge over the train tracks
Walk down Takeshita Street and cross over Meiji street into the “backside” of Harajuku where the more interesting shops are - this is my old neighborhood!

Shibuya:
Echigoya Synth Shop (treasure chest)
Shibuya Crossing and pedestrian streets at night (in front of JR Shibuya Station)
Rent a karaoke box (the big chain “Karaoke Kan” is light blue with red writing)

Akihabara:
ELECTRONICS/ANIME/GAMES/SEX TOYS/NERD GIFTS!

Asakusa:
Huge temple, lots of gifts for sale

Shinjuku:
Exit out the main JR Shinjuku East Exit walk into the crazy nightlife area

Good food that’s easy to find:
Ootoya (chain with dark blue and white signage)
MOS Burger (try their kinpira burger with rice cake buns)
Try a conveyor belt sushi restaurant (called kaitenzushi)
Go to any convenience store and self-serve their Oden (chunky hearty fish cakes and veggies and dumplings with hot broth, cheap and warming)

Don’t go into anything that says “Snack” it’s a very expensive hostess club

I think that covers the basics!

ha! that’s brilliant! nice one, thanks!

besides synth stuff… haha I had to think about that for a while. What else is there?
I’m only just beginning to get my head around what’s to come in Tokyo. I’m pumped. I’m pretty keen on city planning, design, sports, culture… can’t wait!

“the basics”!!! hahaha thanks for all the responses so far… super helpful, although now I really want to see what’s in places called “Snack”. Will report back.

Visit any / travel through any JR train station to hear their individual jingles. Sonic treats, so cool.

People watch In Shinjuku station on a Friday night.

Walk in any direction

PS: don’t catch a taxi - Expensive.

harajuku is fun
if you head left out of the tube entrance you’ll wander down the main crazy streets.

if you head right you can head over through the tori to a nice temple.
if you head right , then left at the bridge , go through yoyogi park , if you go at weekends it ussually has punk rockers dancing , maybe as event in the ampitheatre.

whatever you do , it’ll be fun .the tube system isnt very friendly but you’ll be fine. (buy cheapest fair and use fair exchange machine to pay the correct amount )

the green yamanote line has lots of good stops on it.

Big ups to all of you, thanks for the tips!

First afternoon in Tokyo.

So cool. I’m quite speechless. Thanks for the help guys, really appreciate it. Looking forward to the next few days!
