Is it really that bad at pitching?
That, plus Ben saying it’s filters aren’t very good are putting me off the 1k a bit.

I have the MPC 1k JJOS Xlcd as well as an EMU E4XT Ultra.
The MPC is a bit lacking in comparison when it comes to Pitching and filters compared to the EMU. However the JJOS really takes the MPC to a whole other level with so many features. If you don`t mind treating your samples before they get to the MPC its all good. I some times end up messing with my samples on the EMU and then rerecording them onto the MPC.
Or sending them into the DAW for some fx and then back to the MPC.
I used to get all swept up in posts saying yada,yada the MPC doesn’t sound great.
These days I just try and make music and forget about all that nonsense.
In the end its how interesting your sample choices are that will make a track stand out and not what they were sampled on. With all the features JJOS adds it easy to look past some of these MPC short comings. Still a great sampler for those wanting to get out of the box a little.
When you guys talk about pitching, are you talking about time-pitching, or just ordinary tuning a sample up / down?
If you mean time-pitching (e.g. keeping the sample length and speed the same, but changing the pitch) then that doesn’t both me at all as I never do it - but if you mean that changing the pitch using regular tuning sounds bad then that’s an issue for me.

And well, not to say the 1k does it so badly to make everything unusable, just saying that transient impact etc suffers significantly. But remember that these are subjective opinions!
I’d say the new electribe sampler 2 is on the same level as the 1k when it comes to pitching sounds. Pitching sounds on a MPC 4000 or even the volca sample sounds more pleasing to my ears, however
the filters of the 1000 aren’t great (just like on any mpc), but i’ve never really used them much. i just treated the samples to my liking before import. i never used the mpc1000 as an fx box really. and the pitching definitely introduces artifacts, but let me just recapture real quick: isn’t the desire for artifacts and lofi sound exactly what this post is about? so what’s wrong with it suddenly? something i did a lot on my mpc1000 is pitch something up, print it and pitch it back down to introduce a crunchier sound that is more reminiscent of older samplers. or as mentioned use resampled stuff from those old samplers. this way the 1000 is the best of both worlds. i’d never trade it for an old mpc.
I meant when you slow down a sample via Tuning. It depends on the content of the sample of course. Its not to to bad and sounds interesting on on drums. Works great for ambient stuff at extreme settings when artifacts start to pop up. I just like the sound of the EMU better but thats not much of a help to you. The MPC is still a great hands on sampler so don`t worry. I still detune most of my drum sounds since I like the sound it imparts. There are also a tone of features in JJOS for modulating tuning via ENV or LFO or Via Velocity so its all good.
The benefits of JJOS seriously outweigh any subjective imperfections in the filter / tuning algorithms.

So I made a decision - and an unexpected u-turn:
Just bought an MPC 4000! It’s f***ing cool! It was cheap as chips and is mint.
I also bought an MPC 1000 to compare the two.
I prefer the 4000 - only been using it a day or so but it is so flexible in sampling and modulation etc. and the ADC/DAC are definitely better quality. Although the 1000 is pretty cool.

Does the 1k have JJOS? If yes, then I’d hold onto it a lil longer.
While I love the 4k’s sound (and real sampler engine inside!), JJOS offers alot of tricks the 4k cannot do.
OTOH if you just want the sampling with USB stick compatibility, the 4k will deliver. Full size pads and six pad banks too!
Yes the MPC 1k has JJOS. I strongly recommend it since the standard OS is pretty basic in comparison. Other upgrades to consider are the fat Pads and XLCD screen. I have all of the above and they are well worth the investment.
Turns a stock MPC into a much more versatile sampler.
