Hi,
can you recommend vintage monitors?
With the term vintage I mean the period between 1960-1985.
It doesn‘t matter if they‘re active or passive.
Thanks!

Warren Huart did a little video on some 80s passive monitors he got recently, seemed to really enjoy them – https://youtu.be/mWipyBWkH-0
Are you looking for the NS-10m?
Vintage is always better, obviously.
Except for the Octatrack’s effects, which are utterly unlistenable.
I have some Neumanns KH120 monitors in my “main” studio, so these vintage monitors would be for my second, (little) vintage studio. I thought it would be nice to also have monitors (and furniture) from this time, so it´s like a time capsule room or someting like this… Thanks for the link, very interesting!
Hehe, this is the classic one, I know.
I wanted to see, what´s out there beside this Yamaha classic.
Thanks.
Cool, thanks.
Will watch it.
My sister’s 50 year old Celestion Ditton 44 speakers are still going strong and they are made from solid wood.
Tannoy had a bunch of models that were popular. PBM 6.5 were very common, Little Gold Monitor (which are actually huge) were also common. For the full vintage package though, you would need tp power them (or NS 10’s for that matter) with a Brystone amplifier, which is the really expensive part of this vintage monitor adventure.
…only sense i could think of, if u find an old matching pair of yamahas original ns10’s…
including a valid amplifier…
to add these, once pro studio standards for more than a decade, is the only reason to ask for old monitoring…apart from that, it’s nothing but a big hmmmpf…for pretty much all what psychic pizza said…
It seems like Altec 934s or Urei 813as were pretty common back in the day along with a set of NS-10ms on the bridge of the desk.
I hope you’re looking for a 15 foot wide mixing desk too.
Hehehe, no, I don´t need a 15 foot wide mixing desk, I don´t have so much vintage equipment
In general I´m not looking for some high-end standard with ultra perfect sound and ultra expensive stuff.
I would be happy with some decent okayish sounding speakers, which look nice and old and are still working.
The feeling is more important to me than perfection…
Could it be, that back in the 60ies to 80ies there were not so much monitors compared to today on the market?
Probably because there were not so much home studios?
What’s the budget (including an amplifier) that you had in mind, and how much space do you have to work with?
Maybe check out eBay and Craigslist for some cool looking speaker cabinets, then gut them and hide modern monitors inside?
Since I have an spare amplifier (Harman Kardon), I would try it with it first.
I thought about 600 euros max. as a budget (for a pair of monitors).
Room is appr. 4 x 3 meters.
Hehe, good idea.
I think the iLoud Micro are not so big and could be stuffed into a vintage speaker cabinet…
Hmmm, in fact I already came across several empty vintage cabinets on eBay…
Assuming these work OK it’s a great bargain. They really are very good reference monitors, and more pleasant to work on music than NS 10’s.Will leave you plenty of $$ for a decent used amplifier as well.
Back in the day the Hi Fi consumer market was large whereas the studio consumer market was small and mainly professional.
Nowadays the Hi Fi consumer market has dwindled and the studio consumer market has swelled, mainly as a result of home hobbyists.
Hi Fi manufacturers obviously became aware of the market shift and therefore repackaged and relabelled their products as studio monitors as opposed to simply speakers or even reference speakers.
esq (and all others of course, too), thanks again for the help!
I´ve decided to try the AR18S and found a pair in a pretty good shape, so I ordered them.
I´m a little bit excited now
great stuff! I’m a bit tempted to try some old school monitors myself, so I’d love to hear how you get on with them
