Video recording with stereo audio

Hi all,

I’m Googling for a while for the most easy solution to record videos with direct stereo sound input into the camera, so far with not much luck.

The following gadget looks promissing but has only a mic input: Canon Legria Mini X videocamera

Any other solutions or good tips available to prevent editting after a good jam session and put your clip online with proper sound quality?!

Thanks!

I use a Zoom Q3HD. It was the only cheap cam with line in I could find. And has a stereo mic good for field recording too.

i’m still looking as well…unfortunately it seems like the Q3HD is not available anymore so probably only second hand; also found the Q4 which is out of reach for me at the moment.
haven’t been able to find other cheaper alternatives (think i found a camcorder which had line-in as well but will need to look again, was on ebay but mm…)
i also tried using just the MIC in on an older camera i had with an home-made adapter cable but the audio coming in was really noisy (didn’t really want to start fiddling with wires) so i discarded the option :expressionless:

My setup goes into a mixing board that has a USB out on it. I just run that into my iPad with the camera kit and record with a third party video app. I didn’t have to change the settings on anything and it worked like a charm. The sound was also surprisingly good. The hardest part was finding a way to setup the iPad itself to frame useable video. I ended up propping it on an old wire music stand.

Thanks PMO, great idea! Using an ipad or an iphone would be ideal, I was also looking for these kind of solutions, which mixing board and app do you use for this?
I was also wondering wether the audio pass thru from a iConnectMIDI+ would do the trick and send audio to an ipad/iphone but could not find any confirmation of that so far.

Thanks Pseen, I found this one before but it is not what I’m looking for, you still need to put the video and audio together in some way, unless this would connect directly to an ipad/iphone via USB, not sure about that…

still, as vandamme says, it’ll need to be merged in some way with the video…
is there no solution to this on the market? i mean, i don’t need 10 tracks of audio neither super HD quality…just something that records video and audio that goes with it but it seems way too hard to find something, either too expensive or too many (unneeded) features :sob: … where’s simplicity when you need it!

Right, I found the Kodak ZI10 but it is not sold anymore. The solution of Pseen is ideal, the only addition needed is a USB mixer which can be found fairly cheap from Behringer. I did not find the video app supporting this…

How about a zoom handheld recorder? Even the cheapest one has stereo line in and doubles as a USB sound card and you can go into your iPad or iPhone with the relevant adapter.

If your budget can stretch up a bit, the more expensive models give you more inputs, swappable modules for mics, 1/4 inch inputs, etc.

Works great, straight into most iOS video apps.

There are of course many other brand equivalents that will do the same job.

The beauty of this approach is that you get more than just a sound card plus extreme portability for little outlay compared to buying a cheap audio interface.

I agree with Jc_selector: that zoomq3hd picked up cheap from ebay works like a charm.
works very good as field-recorder… nice and portable. has line-in and line-out.
(so you could put it between your octatrack and mixer… record your gigs…)

and gives nice video-files to work with… I just drop the recording results straight into reaper… I would use that ipad as touchcontroller/synthie thing… much better use for it, then crappy video-recorder… (hard to aim at something usefull and all that)

i tried doing some recordings with tablets at first, but still had the line-in issue but the videos, although didn’t have a good quality, were good enough but i was always left with having to sync the audio with the video and most of the times i would spend hours trying to put even a short video together (without considering the various takes :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: ).
now i use a screen capture software, an external USB camera and the audio line-in on the Mac, too many things perhaps for such a simple task but kind of works  … it would definitely be better to just push one single button to get things done though…will need to check a USB mixer, never though about it

I answered a similar question on muffs:

"The Sony HDR MV-1 is pretty decent, got mine for £200, it can record the audio as wav or compressed, and it has good low light performance as well as a wide angle lens, which makes it ideal for studio gear videos.

It also has wifi so that you can start recording and view from iOS or android phone, ideal for overhead shots where you cannot see the screen.

Its by no means perfect but good for the money and gets the job done."

The app I use is called HEx(cam) HD. I’m pretty sure it was free when I got it. Like I said I never changed the settings anywhere and all I did was a couple test videos to make sure I was getting audio in and it all worked great. Any board with a USB out should work but the one I use is a Yorkville vgm14. I don’t think I’ve had any sync issues but honestly I just listen to the audio when I review it after. I’ve never seen anything glaringly wrong.

Thanks PMO!

Summary of the potential solutions so far:

  1. To have your movies directly on your iphone/ipad:
  • Iphone with an app like Hex (cam)
  • Zoom H1/H5 or a USB mixer , e.g. Yorkville vgm14 or a Behringer already available for ~$50
  1. All in on solution like Zoom Q3HD

it might be a typo, but… just to be clear
the q2hd doesn’t have line-in… the q3hd does… almost got that wrong when I bought mine…

Check out the new zoom Q8 !

I want a little 2x 1/4(TRS) to lightning (camera kit) cable or adapter.

I figure iphone6 video/audio (not speaker mic) is probably good enough for youtube.
