Using Tonverk as a multitimbral sound module

For those who use TV as an 8-part sound module (no internal sequencing), what’s your workflow ?
I’m particularly interested in how do you male sure that everything is set up properly before starting to play a gig.

I just started setting this up and my current workflow is :

  • use every pattern as a set of 8 instruments
  • send the correct PC message from the sequencer (Hapax) on song load.

It works well but I’m fighting against autosave. A manual save of each pattern would ensure I could at least manually reload each pattern before saving the project. But it’s not the case, and I’m super afraid to either lose stuff by accidentally working on the wrong pattern, or let a pattern in a state that is not suited for the start of a song.
I thought of creating copies of each pattern in the correct state in dedicated banks, but is there any better idea ?

Thanks for sharing your workflows, thoughts, and ideas.

I use the Tonverk as a multitimbral sound module with all sequencing from an Oxi One Mk2 via a Neuzeit Drop.

I do everything in a single pattern on the Tonverk. I’ve not had a good experience with sending pattern change messages from external devices, especially if the new pattern on the Tonverk has different samples loaded from the pattern I’m changing away from.

I use the subtracks machine a lot (always on 2 of the TV’s 8 tracks and sometimes up to 4 out of 8). I load different melodic phrases from different instruments I’ve sampled from my hardware synths into each subtrack and trigger those samples from the Oxi on the fly. It’s more of a Digitakt (or even MPC) style workflow but it works for me.

Subtrack tracks sit alongside Grainer and Wavefinder tracks (both of which are superb for rolling textures and atmospheric pads) and one or two multisampled instruments.

I also use the Neuzeit Drop’s scenes and automatic transitions (fades of up to 8 bars, and timed ‘drops’). Between the Drop’s scenes, pattern switching on the Oxi and using different melodic phrases in subtrack tracks for different parts of a track, I’m kind of awash with arrangement options without ever having to change pattern on the Tonverk.

Admittedly my workflow is more focused on managing a single song or flowing from one song into another… I don’t think it would be a broad enough to sustain multiple songs throughout a gig.

Thanks for the feedback. TV is definitely capable to handle all the sounds you need for a song, for sure.
On my side, I’m really after a way to be able to perform multiple songs live. Still not convinced I chose the best workflow (already made silly mistakes and lost hours of “work”).
