Using Midi Controller on 4 Elektron Machines

Hey There

can’t find Clips or Posts on this.

Have a serial Quad-Setup

DT - Syntakt - DT2 - DN

I want to plug the Arturia Minilab 3 into the DT, so I can play Notes only on the DN, but use the Rotary Encoders and Faders on the other Machines.

Can I just plug the Minilab with Midi into the DT and set everything up with Midi Channel and CC or will I have Problems with that?

Only DN will receive Notes and the others CC.

Sry for my English, hope sb knows what I mean

Cheers Tom

The Digi boxes do not forward CC messages as far as I know. They didn’t do it some years ago at least when I tried to do something similar with a Keyboard synth, DN and a Nord Drum.

I think you will have an easier time if you rethink your setup with parallel MIDI connections. Instead of going from one device to another in series, you would use something that acts as a central hub.

There are basic MIDI splitter boxes that take one MIDI input and replicate it across several outputs.

There are configurable options like the Blokas Midihub that would allow you to process, filter and route the MIDI messages, so that you could send notes and/or CC to specific MIDI ports based on the MIDI channel and a ton of other things.

You need a MIDI router

damn ok thanks

but playing notes would work when I plug it into the first device and the DN is the last one? will Notes be forwarded?

You can pass controller midi data to the next device if you use midi thru connection but that data does not contain midi notes/cc from the connected elektron device.

if the chain is

Midi Controller (Minilab3) -> DT1 -> Syntakt -> DT2 -> DN1

the notes from the Minilab3 will be forwarded but not the notes from the DT1?

If you connect the chain using midi thru port from elektron to another you’re able to pass minilab data to each box but not any midi from elektron boxes.

If you need both you need a merger box. Suggested Blokas Midihub is very nice alternative since you can easily do some processing to the midi data.

ok great thanks a lot!

Be aware Midihub doesn’t offer usb host functionality. Returned mine right away when I realized this.

Iconnectivity Mio series does.

As do some of the CME midi tools like the H4midi.

so - I tried the Minilab 3 in my Daisy Chain, plugging it into the first Digitakt and not one Note was sent to the last Box, the Digitone. The Midi Channels were correct, Receiving Notes was active. Nothing happened. Only when I plugged it into the Digitone, but then I couldn’t do the Daisy Chain - too bad.

how about this? I want to use a Keyboard for the DN1 and a Faderfox EC4 for all Boxes in Dawless Mode.
