Using External Effects with Rytm

Hi everyone,

I’m considering buying an Analog Rytm MK2, and I am wondering if there is a way to connect an external effect pedal like a reverb, and have that routed so it only effects one channel on the Rytm, eg the snare.

Thanks

Yes, every sound has an output. (Choke groups are shared)

I don’t know if this only works with rytm.

But what definitely works great is integrating pedals into the DAW via an audio interface and then you see all the routing options with the individual machines from rytm to OB or the individual outputs.

I personally hope for an update that will make it possible to control with the rytm cc.

Thanks for that, I don’t have a mixer right now so I guess I was wondering if you can have one of the individual outs from the AR go into the pedal then back into the AR again and just send the main outs to the audio interface.

Yes, you could send the signal back into Ext. IN, presuming it is line level.

The AR’s Ext. In are stereo, and Elektron haven’t provided a mixer page for it. You have to put a signal in both the L and R or you’ll get hard panning to one side or the other. Your return from the pedal will need to be stereo or dual mono.

(This is different from the A4, which treats the Ext. In channels as two monos, at the mixer stage).

…or potentially use that to advantage. Hard panned mono verbs sound great, for example.

Maybe consider a patch panel. Make a loop in the back with the most often used combo (Snare top -> bottom Pedal In) and hook up all other indivial AR outs to the top rear row, and your Ext In on the bottom rear row for returning to. This way you can swap around the FX unit without having to yank cables from the gear by using a patch cable on the front.

Optionally you can even add the main audio out, the audio/sample in and other to the patch panel as well or even more flexibility, loops, mix and FX sharing. Once you go patch you can’t go back.

Recomended!

Yeah, I have thought about it in the past, I dont have any rack gear and dont really have the space for it so I’m trying to think about how to best do this. I’m thinking perhaps setting up FX sends on my audio interface might be the best way forward and would allow me to apply the pedal to any of the 4 input sources I have.

Stereo is good for me, I have an OTO BIM and OTO BAM that I thought could be cool to use on the AR, but as mentioned above I think setting up sends on my audio interface will be the best path forward and maybe down the track I’ll get another interface with lots of line ins and outs and use that like a patch bay.

But I also came across this the other day which looks amazing, on paper at least.

Are you sending the effect return back in through the Ext In? Or are you sending it to a mixer afterwards?

Nothing yet, currently I have a Digitakt (previously owned an A4MK2) but am now looking at the AR MK 2 and thinking about how it could work with my effects.

One option could be to send the Rytm Ext out through effect pedal into the DT inputs which can be dual mono, then run digi main outs into Rytm Ext in

I run all Rytm outputs through a mixer then send stereo aux from mixer back into Rytm Ext in

Another option would be a small, desktop unit like an ART TPatch - takes up a lot less space than a full 1U one, and can stand anywhere.

In sendig it to the mixer… to a saparete channel just for the efect,
