I know you can sample really long parts and stream them from the CF card. I want to do this, but I also want to be able to have midi parts and other elements playing from patterns, in sync with the bed-track.
It’s near impossible to trim the beginning of a whole song so that it will line up perfectly beat by beat all the way through. But perhaps using slices is a better way to have smaller chunks that can be kept in sync better?
I’ve tried sampling 8 bar loops and they almost never stay in sync - and using timestretch just makes it all sound worse if the original sample wasn’t trimmed correctly.
Does anyone have experience with this?
I assume that if I sample a whole song and trigger it right on the one - the beds will be out of sync with the patterns within 30 seconds or so.
so long as there is no silence at the start of the file and TS is turned on then you should have no problem, i never have and i’ve got 4 minute files running in tempo with internal tracks that are used for mixing tracks between my OT projects. it sees any space as part of the file so it adds that to it’s tempo calculation - if there is space it will screw your tempo/beat matching up.
no need to use 8 bar loops really mate just edit teh file properly and make sure TS is on
Is the OT clock master? If so I see no reason why things drift out of sync. I often use long samples and they stay in sync.
If you decide to go for slices, you might want to check out OctaChainer. In “Steps” mode you can load a long sample, set the BPM (the cursor keys is useful for precise settings on the windows version) and the tool will then create an .OT file for you with a slice every X number of steps.
I think the reason my samples do not stay in sync is that they are coming from a DAW, not being created by the OT, and the BPM on the OT is not exactly the same as my DAW. So, 120 bars of 82 BPM, might need me to add space at the end to make it exactly 120 bars.
I need to experiment more with this to understand what the OT is doing.
Thanks for the info ! now I know people are doing it and not having tempo issues.
To be fair it shouldn’t matter even if the samples came from the moon, it will adjust the tempo to fit the file so just make sure there’s no wasted space at front or end mate.
