I have anker usb hubs and the connections between my OB machines seem to be pretty bad, any idea on how to ensure connections are solid and won’t be lost?
The cables are good, the connections are solid in the usb hub. But even if I securely plug the cables into the usb hub they don’t show up every time and sometimes they disconnect randomly…so its not stable enough for smooth usage, its constant troubleshooting trying to finnick around until they show up and there seems to be no permanent solution where I can rely on that the connections will not be disconnected… Also I don’t know why there would be any problems with the usb hub either as I have taken good care of it and it just sits there, but from the troubleshooting it seems the only problem is the usb hub setup. I have a bunch of drives plugged in for instance that do not disconnect, only but on rare occasions - the Elektron connections are much harder to establish. I am also using longer usb cables that go across my studio, I think 10-15 feet.
I just realized I had this problem when attempting to upgrade the OS and while troubleshooting I realized that the connection in the usb hub was not good, so I plugged directly into my computer usb to finish the upgrades successfully for the remaining machines I wanted to upgrade.
In my case I was havimg also unstabile USB Connections with my A4 and AR. Overhub solved my problem, But, of course with a power supply. Now I can Plug everything I want Running OB and Running completely stable.
I have 3 of these connected to a thunderbolt hub and daisy chained out from it. My ssds/hds connected to these seem to be stable, but not the Elektron devices.
Yes I think so, it comes with power supplies which are always powering the 3 hubs if that’s what you mean. The thing about the cable length is that it worked fine in another usb input, and I checked all the usb cables with a cable tester and they were all working. I am thinking I will just try the overhub out and then I’ll get back with on how that goes.
Normally the Overhub should only make a difference if you have old MK1 devices not supporting USB 2.0 speeds (which you haven’t). In your case I would experiment with your setup (reduce cable lengths/connect only the Elektron devices to the hubs etc.pp.) to find the problem.
The Overhub is especially targetting the Mark 1 devices (AR MK1, A4 MK1) which uses only USB 1.x. Normally a single USB 1.x device will slow down the complete USB 2.0 hub unless it supports MTT (the Overhub does).
I didn’t know that, maybe ill hold off, and try some more stuff out then…the cable length has to stay because of the configuration of my studio. I am going to try moving around the cables or the hubs to different ports and see if that does anything. I am sure its the hub messing things up, although I dont think the hub is broken, unless it got fried somehow so certain ports are messed up, but i have no idea why or how that would happen. Its just been sitting there with cables in it, so its not been damaged or anything from usage.
i had this same issue when connecting my DN + AR to my macbook pro- a couple of Ankers and my hefty CalDigit, all coming back with the same unreliable behaviour with Overbridge. Once i connected directly to the laptop’s USB ports i havent had a single issue in several months. So i’d say theres definitely an issue with using hubs, for some at least
That’s very good to know someone else has tried to use these same hubs. Yeah exactly, when I plug directly into the usb of my Mac it works too for the updates in transfer & overbridge can then see them as well. I think generally these Anker usbs are not bad usb hubs, but for some reason they do not play well with Elektron. They work fine for my hard drives/SSDs though
Does anyone notice a big difference between using usb 2.0 vs. 3.0 when using overbridge in a DAW. If I plug directly into the Mac the only downfall is I won’t be able to utilize my thunderbolt port so it will have to be usb 2.0 instead of 3.0 because with my thunderbolt doc I have usb 3.0 capabilities, but the direct usb connection on my computer is usb 2.0.
I am wondering if I will hit a bottle neck w/usb 2.0. I hope I can figure out some successful way to get it to work with my thunderbolt doc, but if 2.0 runs fine I wouldn’t care.
