Just a PSA to recommend Uberspace hosting.
I’ve spent the last week recreating my website by hand so that I could “self” host it. On a recommendation I checked out Uberspace hosting and so far I have to say I’m really impressed. Good pricing and a proper no-nonsense admin interface (fully command-line driven if you like). It’s about the closest thing to self-hosting I think you can go withouth actually self-hosting (or as far as I want to go
) They seem to have a really cool ethos too.
The only negative at the moment is that a lot of the admin interface (web) link go to German-language pages (it’s a German company).
You do have to get your hands a bit dirty and it’s not the kind of hosting platform aimed at real beginners (like Wix, Squarespace etc.). The reason I did it is to make my website platform-agnostic: it’s moved from Squarespace to Wix to Webflow over the years and every time your data is essentially locked into those platforms. This way I can now move it to another similar hosting or eventually maybe self-host properly (should I get bored enough!)
The only thing I have left to do is connect up my existing domain name but considering how easy it’s been to set up so far I think it’s going to be sweet (famous last words). Even the PHP/JS emailer pretty much works straight out of the box (with the right code to actually use it but luckily for me there’s plenty of that knocking about!)
