UAD Sphere LX / DLX mics

I added another UAD Apollo to my rig this week and as part of a promotion they’re running till the end of this month, I received their Sphere LX mic for free.

In case anyone is interested in microphones, I thought I’d share my first impressions:

The mic is well built but still light enough to fit in my Rycote shock mount which I originally bought for my Neumann TLM102 (a much smaller LDC mic).

The two capsules in the Sphere LX perform some mad voodoo, with the press of a button it completely eliminates the room from the signal it picks up :flushed: - no idea how they did this, but it’s remarkable. I have high ceilings in my studio room (4metres) and despite the acoustic treatment I have, there still is quite a bit of room audible, wven when micing up close (+ its not the most pleasant sounding room unfortunately). I wasn’t even aware these mics could/would do that lol.

The mic modelling (main attraction) also is well impressive. I have a Neumann TLM103, used to own an AKG C414 as well as a few of the modelled dynamic microphones and the signatures of all these mics I know are impressively captured and reproduced by the Sphere LX. My favourite model is the C12, I don’t know if it is accurate, but it does produce that noticeable high-end sheen I associate with the C12. Super impressed.

Anyone else here has one of these? What are your impressions? Tips & tricks on getting the most out of these mics?
