Twisted Electrons TWISTfm

This is what the manual says. I haven’t experimented myself with this but seems to explain it quite well

“The secondary 2-operator layer in TWISTfm features Operators 5 and 6. These operators can be arranged either in series or parallel. In series mode, Operator 6 produces the sound, and Operator 5 modulates it for added complexity. In parallel mode, both operators function independently, akin to stacked oscillators in a traditional synthesizer, allowing for straightforward, layered sound generation.”

Yeah, configurations of OP5+OP6 are clear to me, it’s just I initially thought, that each layer is somehow independent, i.e. possibly having its own MIDI channel. But that doesn’t seem to be the case, both layers play together, use same voices, except the when the ARP link is set to unlink them and use separately.

Cool thanks for the explanation

The hardest machine to make sound good I’ve ever owned (even by the standards of FM because there aren’t a million presets!) but when you hit that sweet spot good lord.

Almost makes me want to get a Jomox FM desktop machine for a companion (then I think about that wee screen).

I’m still torn between the two. Apparently some major issues with the gain staging in the Mod FM d (very low headroom from what I can understand?).

So many great FM options that are different enough from each other. I often wish for something a bit more gnarly like a Twisted Electrons box, but also check out Modor, Digitone II, Kodamo EssenceFM, etc.
I have Digitone II and EssenceFM at the moment. Both amazing

I get my OPL3 kicks from the Cheerful Electronics’ OPL Studio. Two OPL3 chips included, but no analogue filters. Interesting interface. Multitimbral. There are some quirks and bugs to work out (I have done a few videos on it mentioning these), but it’s a really interesting product and delivers the FM sound I was looking for.

I’m not suggesting OPL Studio is a replacement for the TwistFM - the interface is too different and without the filters the sound is very different also.

on sale at T for 999€ til Nov 30th!

When I visit the shop it’s €783

If you are at the official Twisted Electrons webshop they show prices without VAT and it will be added in the checkout once you enter your country. I think @cgb meant at Thomann perhaps?

yes, at thomann (= “at T”)

Mine arrived today, great sounding synth, but…i was just messing with presets and i noticed that sliders when changed immediately jumps to value, there is no catch or pass through when slider is not in preset position.
Am i missing something, this makes it unusable. If there were catch values and high or low value display indicator it would be perfect. I’m thinking of returning it, shame, because it sounds great, but not usable. Thanks in advance

I think sending an email to Twisted Electrons could be a good idea and request this feature if it’s important. I’m not sure if I would need it because I have never thought about it. Alex listens to feedback and have implemented several changes due to that

Thanks for the reply. I sent them an email. I bought the instrument through Thomann and I am honestly willing to return the device since there is a 30 day return option, because the options mentioned are important to me. I need them to learn Fm synthesis since I am not an expert. I also see that these options are important for changing presets live and then further manipulating the sound.

It looks like MegaFm have catch mode, and it’s cheaper model, so i guess it would be also doable (and fair) to implement that option on TwistFm, their more expensive model.

I will wait for them to reply to my email if something like that will be introduced soon and then I will decide whether to return or keep it.

Alex replied that the parameter pickup option will be implemented in early January, so I’m definitely keeping the device, because it’s a beast in terms of sound.

Now i have to think about reverb pedal to go with Twist fm. Any suggestions are more than welcome.

Wow that’s amazing to hear. Alex is a great guy and he also implemented a feature I asked for

I use a Meris Mercury X and it sounds absolutely amazing. But I think many reverbs will do great.

Ufff, Meris is out of my budget, but what I heard on Yt sounds amazing. Great for you, it must be great to pair Twist and Meris. I will definitely research what is on the market, I see it is huge when it comes to reverb pedals.

Absolutely, I’ve already watched Analog Heat, it’s on my wishlist…one day, thanks for the recommendations

Zoom’s MS70 CDR doesn’t have any distortion circuits like the Heat but it has lots of reverbs, it’s cheap, and it sounds fantastic.
