TV Show Recommendations

Also, Sort Of on HBO was really good.

Also, Please Like Me.

Sometimes I’ll watch an episode or two of a second season and then, if it’s detracting from the other content, I just literally pretend it doesn’t exist. I’ve ruined a few shows by trying to retroactively forget the second season exists so if it’s losing me, I’ll usually just do a dead stop, reverse course.

Have never got around to watching Veep, but I presume being from the mind of Armando Ianucci, it’s gotta be pretty strong. He also created The Thick of it in the UK, which is of a similar political vibe.
For anyone who has never checked out his stone old classic The Day Today, please, I implore you to do so. News parody at it’s very finest and of course the TV birth of Partridge.

Have just started Succession again with the Duchess. The writing and acting are just sublime. It really is one of my absolute faves ever. It’s rare that every character can be so disgusting but you somehow root for them (well, maybe not Shiv!)
Utter brilliance!

Iannuci was recently involved in ‘the franchise’ which was fine … behind the scenes of making a marvel style film.

He also worked on ‘avenue 5’ which was … a bit rubbish.

He’s weirdly overrated. Veep (incredible prescience aside), Death of Stalin, Thick of It—they’re fine.

His own show had it’s moments too , quite old now.
I’m unsure what he does in the franchise as he’s an associate producer , which can mean anything … funding / a few phone calls / sharing contact numbers…. It might not be anything creative like writing / directing etc.

I never liked Alan partridge or anything with Steve coogan in but many people seem to like it.

A couple of classics I haven’t seen mentioned: Avatar: The Last Airbender; Wolf Hall

Hacks is probably the best sitcom since pen15 (though I admit to not having seen Reservation Dogs yet…)

Agreed. And I thought the way it ended was brilliant.

Going back a ways, Justified was a fantastic series. Based on an Elmore Leonard character.

Also, Deadwood is really something. Ian Mcshane is so cool.

Deadwood is my all-time favorite show :metal:

Quite possibly mine as well.

I might have to re-watch it. I love the way it worked in so many historical figures without being corny about it. Wild Bill, Calamity Jane, George Hearst, the Pinkertons and a lot more that I probably forgot.

Same, just started a rewatch, and it’s just unbelievably good. The Shakespearean language is emphasised a lot, and sure, it is impressive, but I’m more in awe of the writing in general - how the characters evolve in conjunction with the masterfully paced plot: it’s just impeccable drama. Best pilot episode in television history, and it just carries on like that.

Just finished Scavengers Rein and it is stunning and heartbreaking. One of the best scores I’ve heard for a long time as well. Highest of high recommendations!

just finished 100 years of solitude. was wonderful. beautiful, tragic, magical. highly reccied if you’re into that kinda thing.

I’m sure this has been recommended before many times, but…

I loved the original Coen brother’s movie, Fargo. I’ve somehow put off watching the TV show Fargo for years now. Got a Hulu subscription for Christmas and began watching the Fargo TV show.

I have to say the first season is, so far, pretty excellent. It has a lot of the movie’s atmosphere, characters mannerisms, and vibe. Good stuff. Highly recommended (at least the first season, so far). Really enjoying it.

I enjoyed all five seasons. Noah Hawley has pretty much created the Coen Brothers Cinematic Universe. Characters and back stories are connected across the seasons, even though each season is a separate story. Stories can go in wild directions, which is one of the things I love about it.
