Trying to get the isolated send effects when recording using overbridge

I was thinking today about this and had an idea that was definitely going to work for sure. I mean, why wouldn’t it?

Turns out it didn’t work and I’m not entirely sure why it didn’t.

The plan:

  • Record each individual track and the mains using overbridge. Make sure the compressor is not active.

  • import into daw

  • group all individual channels but leave the main out

-loudness normalise both the group and the main

  • invert the phase of the main

What should have happened:

The audio should have cancelled out, given they should sound exactly the same with the only difference being the reverb and delay effects, leaving me with a file with the send effects on it and nothing else. I know I’m doing it right cause I’ve done this phase inverting thing numerous times for various tests and experiments before…

It didn’t work. When I inverted the phase, there was still audio, though mostly shifted to one side but no luck at isolated delay and reverb.

On the bright side, you can have isolated reverb if you just let the side information through from the main…

Any audio nerds know what’s the deal here? I’m curious to know why this doesn’t work with the digitakt when it should, right?

Edit: nahhh I got it to work now, yes it works! Brilliant!

If anyone is interested in isolating the send effects, follow my steps, make sure they are properly loudness normalised and the effects will be available to you :grinning::man_dancing:

You can always just use the audio routing on the DT to only send the FX and not the audio tracks to the main outs and record them that way (while still recording all of the individual tracks on their own OB channels).

Now the question is: why is the main about 6 dB louder than the individual channels summed together?

This is my way to go too. it is quite easy: settings > audio routing > route to main, and then press all the tracks buttons (1-8). they should go from green to red and in the “route to main” menu 2/10. notice that the page buttons for filter (delay) and amp (reverb) are green.
now you get the separate tracks in your DAW and in the DT master track only the effects.
