Trigger mode not working in Tracks mode! Digitakt 2

Greetings,

So I’m new to these machines and have been using the Digitakt II only a few weeks, but am a seasoned studio engineer and performer. I need some help because I’m perplexed on why it stopped working like normal.
——
Problem: when I play the pads 1-16 in ‘tracks’ mode I can’t hear the kit that’s pulled up. I can hear one sound at a time in keyboard mode. I can hear them all running the sequencer. But I can’t play all the sounds of the kit like I could when I got it.
My external midi device also stopped playing all the sounds in tracks mode and only plays one sound in keyboard mode no matter if I have that mode selected on the Digitakt or not.

I tried updating to latest firmware and doing a full reset. Issue not resolved.
——
What I was doing when it happened:
I was sequencing an external midi device which I set to channel 16 (just read on here there’s been issues w that before).
The external device was a Roland Handsonic HPD-20.
I realized it wasn’t playing properly w Local control turned off. Not all of the midi data was being processed/listened to and sent back to the unit apparently.
For instance, if you press one pad while striking another pad you can get different sounds. It also responds to pressure control input and uses mute groups. I thought they were all CC’s. Works fine using Logic Pro for instance.
So I was digging in settings on both units and turning on and off local control on the HPD when this happened. I would also switch midi channels so I didn’t have to unplug the midi cable when turning local back on.
At one point I turned on and off the program change send and receive options.
It was around that time I turned back to the Digitakt and I noticed buttons 1-3 turned yellow and they played 3 of the 16 sounds and the rest of the pads 4-16 played a single synth sound in keyboard mode. The Page leds were all yellow as well.
I couldn’t get out of it that split “mode”. I had it synced to an external midi clock as well. So I unplugged midi. Didn’t change anything. So I turned off and on unit and and I think that got me out of the yellow page indicators but then the pads wouldn’t play the sounds respectively.
They tested ok on the internal check. They all work in keyboard mode and other modes.
But not in track mode. The sound says it’s being triggered but you don’t hear it only in that mode.
So I did factory reset. Nothing.
Then latest firmware update. Another reset.
No change.
Read that before there were issues w midi on channel 16 and a bug. Figured resets would definitely fix it. So now am wondering if it’s a hardware issue or if there’s a special reset reset I can do.
Your help is appreciated!

Hi, can you confirm that you tried and validated this issue in a new, fresh project and didn’t just go back to the same project you were having problems with before?

I think that it will be important in determining if your problem is settings related or software related, because an issue related to settings is unlikely to follow you to a new project.

Done. I also didn’t have but 1 empty test project. But I created another one. Also loaded the preset projects again. No difference. Sounds are there but can’t play them all in track mode.

Are you set up to send midi notes to the digitakt? I believe that sending chromatic notes starting with C0 to the digitakt should trigger the tracks in order, so for example C0 would trigger track 1 and then successively numbered midi notes starting from there should trigger the tracks individually as one shots.

Something sounds pretty off to me, for it to be having issues across multiple projects. That’s fairly abnormal.

Just to confirm, you’re talking about the digitakt’s internal (track) sounds, not using it to send midi to another device when we’re talking about these issues that you’re having, correct?

It worked like that at first and stopped. Regardless I can’t even play the internal kits w the built in pads on the Digitakt. Only single tracks in keyboard mode. I sent a ticket to Elektron too but it may take some time to hear back. Thanks for suggestions.

I’ll give it some thought but you may need to wait for elektron to respond. Perhaps I’m missing something about the way you’re doing it, I’ll go back over your first post.

The fact that it worked previously and now the behavior has changed seems odd to me. Did you make any changes in the personalization menu? Just trying to think of something that might impact all behaviors and not just on a pattern or project level.

Just an observation: Page leds being yellow are normally an indicator that you’re in preset mode. Which you were, kind of (only for buttons 1-3).

Interested to hear the outcome.

Tech support got back to me. I had to go to the personalize menu and make sure the trigger setting was on normal. I must have changed it to silent when menu diving to try and figure out my midi issue. Hope that helps someone some time!
