I randomly see good bits of info on the 707. Let’s make this thread a repository for all of it.

This is super cool:
“Turn A Roland TR-707 Into A 909, 808, 727, LinnDrum, LM-1 & Oberheim DMX”

Easier to use a sampler. I’m not sure the 707 adds any particular character / sound to anything but I guess it breathes new life into an old drum machine.
You can get roms for hr16 and many drum
Machines with similar methods.
Happy 707 day !!!
Using the Play here with the sample pack I made from my label mate real Roland unit.

Grab the sample pack here, it’s free (and it’s in your Tracker / Play if you hav one).
4 posts on this thread is criminal.
I almost always gravitate towards 707 samples over any other Roland box. Been thinking of picking up an original 707
Also think it’s funny how underrated it is. I mean does everyone else really think the 707 is shit? Only x0x that Roland hasn’t recreated in boutique hardware?
Sorry I don’t have anything else to contribute at the moment, but damn, what is going on here?
Everything has its place, but I personally find the 707 samples to be the least useful of the XOX boxes, in terms of general musical application. They’re neither electronic enough or acoustic enough.
Anyway, just one man’s opinion, of course.
Cheers!
Who cares what other people think? 707 sounds banging, when 6, 8, and 9 dont fit, 7 always fits. I use it in my stuff from time to time.
Killer funk here sir ! Love the bassline
Glad you like it
it’s funny… I wanted a 909 for years and then finally got one (OK, a clone of one from Steda). but then shortly after picked up a 707 for cheap and ended up using it more. they can usually be had for about $500, which is a solid price I think. the sequencer is super fun to work with too. 707 does a great job at just being punchy and simple, sound-wise. not big and booming and overwhelming the mix. doesn’t work with everything of course. but neither do big and booming drums. it’s Roland’s version of the DX/DMX/Drumtraks, basically.
I love the sound of the 707 samples but I will say they are more useful in a sampler, since the 707 offers zero control over them other than volume and accent. I’d love to pick up a modded one that lets you at least pitch them. they’re also great inside something like a Sequential TOM that uses low bit rate samples and gets extra crunchy when you change their pitch.
Microlith used it a lot. this track is a great example:
