TouchOSC mk1 Octatrack layout

Hey folks,

does anyone still happen to have a layout for OT on the old version of TouchOSC? I have an ancient iPad, which isn’t supported by the latest TouchOSC version. Would like to see if it’s any good to use it for controlling the level faders and mutes on OT.

Have you tried to import TouchOSC MKII template ? There are some for Octatrack.

Can’t speak for specific Octatrack templates, as I don’t use an Octatrack anymore…

But I will say, TouchOSC is amazing, revolutionised my music making. I now run 9 Ipads (8 running TouchOSC, 1 Drambo), which control 2 Macs and a load of hardware.

It’s well worth building your own templates on TouchOSC. It takes a while to get good at it, but the payoff is immense.

With a little scripting you can do some truly amazing things, too!

You only need one license to run it ? You did set it up via the hapax virtual channels - i.e. each listening to a individual virtual cable ?

Bought it once on Ipad, and also on Mac (it’s a lot easier to build and script on the Mac, then you send them over with WIFI, very easy), the license(s) work for all my Ipads and both Macs.

I don’t use the virtual cables. I have everything connected via 2 routers, USB and DIN etc, then the routers are connected to the Macs and the hardware.

Some of the Ipads are connected to the routers (they’re Iconnect), some are connected directly to the Macs (via IDAM or Network).

Most Ipads are also connected via WIFI (for OSC direct to the Macs).

I built interfaces for a bunch of my devices. A simple extension is scripting some LFOs for parameters that aren’t usually modulatable. Really opens up some possibilities.

Absolutely!

I’ve been doing bi-directional feedback from Abletons own LFO’s. Then translucent ‘ghost’ controls on top of controls… for visual indication of LFO movement.

Also, you know the ‘Pull’ parameter?

Added the opposite, basically ‘Push’. Then an extra control for slewing speed.

Then you set stuff moving and it’ll gradually move into place. So helpful when jamming!

So, TouchOSC might well be the choice for me.
The slight issue is that it doesn’t seem to adjust layouts to fit the screen size. Since I have both an iPad and an iPad Mini—and plan to use one or the other for live performances depending on the project—that would mean having to recreate my layouts for each model.

I don’t think there are many other options for creating MIDI control surfaces on an old iPad Mini stuck on iOS 9.03.

Yeah that could be a bit of a pain as your layouts grow in complexity.

Might be better to pick an Ipad and just use that one only.

I don’t know where you are, but here in the UK you can pick up second hand Ipads cheaply on ebay.

Honestly, I’d recommend an Ipad Air 3 as the minimum to run it on. It’ll certainly run on less, but more complex layouts will slow down too much.

Absolutely worth getting into, it’s just so useful!

I already spend too much time with two iPad instead of making music ! :smile:
The layout is not supposed to become much more complex in time. I already have a setup complex enough. I try to KISS.

I’m almost sure I won’t use my iPads to control my PC/DAW : I still have a MCU and a Stream Deck, an lots of MIDI master keyboards and control surfaces.

The iPads are for live. There are lighter and thinner than my Novation Zero SL and can be multi-purpose devices.
