Torso Electronics S-4 (sculpting sampler)

Wondering if it would be a great pairing with DT II for polyphonic sampling duties or too overkill for that.

Some materials might? But if it’s still there when all things are pretty much bypassed there might be an error. How much do you boost the output signal to hear the noise?

If I set up the volume half way through on the mixer channel, it is audible.

If I crank up the gain on the mixer to maximum it is very audible, basically I can hear a non stop drone with no play - is that normal?

maybe the unit is noisy and I am just cranking up too much the volume? I cannot believe it though, seems not normal to me.

it is not a pink noise, it is a digital noise similar to the one that happens when you put a mobile phone close to a speaker or when you touch a pair of jack cable connected to a mixer on the other side - sort of ground noise

What kind of mixer are you using? What firmware are you running? And do you have a similar processing device you could plug into your mixer and see if that makes the same noise on the same levels?

Mackie 1202
Firmware 1.2.1
I have tested all the OTO pedals they are very silent and Boss RE303 silent as well

Record a short snippet of the sound if possible. I can try to listen at home. Are you using balanced or unbalanced cables?

S-4 OS v1.2.2 Hotfix

December 9 2024

Bugfixes

  • Improved project buffer handling for long samples, enhancing overall loading stability
  • DEFORM: Fixed an issue where the DECAY parameter remained static and could not be adjusted

Known Bugs:

  • While the improved buffer handling resolves some of the project load issues, it does not fix corrupted projects on save. Stay tuned for a completely revamped save system.

Get the update at: Support Find the update instructions in the manual. Remember not to unzip the update file before transferring it to the S-4.

I tried both

I will send you the audio

Awesome setup. Do you sequence the S-4 with the Cirklon?

thanks! yeah, super fun and flexible setup.

all I’ve done is clock the S4 from the Cirklon for looping other instrument purposes but it works great for that.

I have a more official loop sync / unsyced / frippetronics style video scoped out to film when I’ve got some time off work at the end of the month - will definitely post that when it’s ready.

Awesome, I will watch for sure.

I feel like the cirklon sequencing the s4 could be absolutely sick but I’m just guessing since i don’t have an s-4. I sequence old hardware samplers with my cirklon though, and it’s fantastic.

I’ll see if I can coax something cool out of it when I’m filming that video! I wonder how deep the MIDI CC implementation is on the S4 (a thing I am currently too lazy to look up).

Super deep which is why Cirklon could be a powerhouse with it. All parameters can be mapped - 127 CCs.

List is on page 120-124 of manual.

Use it with an Hapax and yes, all parameters can be mapped.

One of the fun things you can do is map the record and overdub functions of each track to specific notes (they must be on MIDI channel 16) and name the notes. That way it’s really easy to use a sequence to neatly record exact numbers of bars that then loop smoothly (and to which you can then overdub more), all from Cirklon.

First ditties with this pair. The DNii’s comb filter is pretty great for creating sounds to trigger the S-4’s resonator.

Cute couple! Like they made for each other. Thanks for sharing

Thanks! They are a pretty cool pair. I really wish the DNII had more outputs though. It would be really cool if I could send out at least two mono tracks to process separately within the S-4, while keeping the rest of the mix unprocessed. Throw in my M8 for sampling and a small mixer and that would be my ideal live setup :raised_hands:

Not perfect, but you could hard pan DN tracks left/right and make different tape tracks on the S4 only monitor either.

That would be a great technique for recording parts, but it wouldn’t be so ideal for making or performing full songs. I’m gonna experiment with it though. I’ve been processing my Double Knot in a similar way (since its signal is hard panned to the left and right) and it’s become my favorite pairing with the S-4. The Digitone has a much more diverse sound pallet, so it’ll be fun to see what I can cull from it.
