Im making wonderful loops on this thing. If you dont have hardware I assume you’re using a daw. The DT was my first bit of hardware and I personally think it’s a brilliant first tool. it makes use of so many different techniques. The s-4 at the moment is pure sampler / daw food. I’d go dt2 personally.
somehow i can’t get it to work
track 1 send 2 set to full …
Apart from that, I just broke it by fmming pitch if ring
If you haven’t yet --you also have to set the “receiving” track to “bypass.” Maybe that helps?
Hope it is unbricked!
or set the Tape to Monitor, or Track 2 to sends only.
All three options just if you want to immediately listen to track 1 audio thru track fx.
IIRC track 1 send 2 to full should be enough to be able to record into Tape
awesome, that was it! and yes, powercycling and it worked again
Thanks for the detailed response!
I also thought about keep it in the box, but going hardware for that is just to get a little more immediacy and restrictions: having so many amazing plugins kinda paralyzed me a little bit.
I’d love to go the OT route but I’ll be missing some of the modern functionalities of DT2/S4 like usb audio.
I’ll save the money in the meantime and wait to see how the S4 is developed.
Thanks everyone!
Did you remove it already? isn’t it beautiful?
Very impressed by just simply the sounds I got out of mine in the first 30 minutes. It probably won’t rival any other device in terms of specs (or it might, who knows), but just the way everything works and synergizes and sounds like is pretty cool.
S-4 is def not going to be a good choice for your one and only hardware sampler, mostly because it doesn’t have a sequencer.
i didn’t remove it because my impressions after first messing around with it is that i might return it
It seems it’s pretty divisive Very interesting. Of course it’s not going to be for everyone, but I’m curious about what you think with more time spent.
The real bummer is „Ring“ which either always sounds like a fast bbd selay (and i can do the same sound on lots of other gear i already have) or a grandfather clock‘s bell. It‘s like just 2% of the sound range of MI Rings, and while looking at screenshots it looked like it would have the same parameters (just called differently), it has much less. With granular into Rings (not vice versa!!!), I made the most bonkers sounds. Here, it can get in (another) gnarly territory, but never in a way that exceeds what i can do with other methods. Thus, there‘s no reason for me for having it…
I never listen to demos und buy purely based on specs (and it always worked … Syntakt, Hydra, Opsix, …), but this time I kinda fooled myself, gnaaa
Edit: Now my hopes lie solely on Aodyo Omega, which does all that (granular, resonators), except samples. Which doesn‘t matter for me
I’d not heard of the S4 until the other day, it sounds amazing for ambient from what I’ve seen on YT, I’d imagine it would work well with my Hapax sequencer and DT/DN (if I every did get an S4)? Gonna wait until some months and see how it pans out. I like the Tempera too. I’m just worried with some gear, I had a Microcosm recently to help with some ambient music, but it was to unpredictable for me, I’d hear something wonderful, then the next day I could never reproduce it.
It can use midi over USB with Ableton I think.
It can. If your plan is to use it with your DAW exclusively then that makes sense.
However, I am not sure if I would ever buy a sampler for the sole purpose of using with a DAW. A DAW is a better sampler in every way, and there are dozens of granular synth VSTs that cost 1/10th the price of the S-4.
I am happy with my S-4, but it mostly has utility to me as a complementarily device to other hardware. YMMV!
I wouldn’t count out how much you’ll be using the DT2 to resample the S-4. I’m sure as the features expand more it’ll be more centralised to arrangement within the box but the modulation on offer in the S-4 is really great for grabbing sequencer food and chopping out the inflections that sound best in the modulation routing. Wanna get a DT2 just for that reason.
dang I want one of these… I am going to sell my Tempera synth to fund an S4. It’s an awesome synth, but I feel like its more suited to making soundscapes. I want something more like the S4 to shape sound. So far everything I have seen/heard I feel like the way the S4 is setup, it’s more what I am looking for…
Unless I find someone who has the reverse situation and wants to trade, I will have to order one and wait til end of summer for it’s arrival.
Sniffing around the first press release to read about the “coming soon” perform and scene pages. Did torso mention anything more about these buttons?
I assume this is related to the perform button:
Performance in action
At its core, the S-4 revolves around four action buttons that provide instantaneous and dynamic control. The behavior of the action buttons transforms with the flow of the interface, ensuring that you always have the control you need. Each audio device has a dedicated set of action buttons for controlling specific elements, such as triggering audio recording or freezing the granular processor’s buffer. The action buttons also provide quick access to essential functions like muting and selecting tracks, enhancing workflow efficiency.
No word on scenes yet from what I could find. Hopefully it’s similar to octatracks - scene / fader situation.
nice! i was waiting for a video working with a drum loop instead of ambient textures.
does the sample mangling somehow provide the option to tie in with an external clock so i could have the whole thing running alongside an external beat?
e.g. all speeds (env, lfo, grain triggers) set to be divisions of the external clock?
Yes, when midiclock is available. Which should happen at the end of June.
