Yep devs mentioned on the discord that its a raspberry4.
Wish i didnt know that. Keeps me thinking of this 40€ device in there. O well…
Without the Raspberry a lot of cool devices wouldn’t even exist, who cares what’s inside.
Does anyone know when the first update is supposed to be?
All digital devices are built using chips that cost a few bucks They just leveraged a bit of hardware and software groundwork that’s been done with the rpi.
Yeah my only deterrent from pi in the past was that it seemingly always has a some OS layer you never see below it and that OS layer often rears its head causes timing or other issues in hard to track down ways for the developers… seems like they are actually fast enough now that the OS layer isn’t as much of an issue for synth design. Still prefer the idea of hardware running bare metal though.
I always worried about feasibility for real-time audio then monome made norns and that made it clear it could be done
FYI… I emailed Perfect Circuit, they said they only got enough units to fulfill the people that put in pre-orders between Nov-Jan.
I think on the discord they mentioned (end of) June as a possible firmware update??
One thing I forgot to mention and that I see no one else has mentioned:
The time stretch is really good. Maybe the best I’ve heard in hardware form.
So, I found an S-4 in stock at Elevator Sound in Spain. I purchased it last night and it shipped already. I must have gotten really lucky but just a heads up to look around for dealers that may have some stock that didn’t get a lot of preorders.
When slicing hits and you can chop records sequence the slice and the modulate them into crazy texture it will be glorious. Have a magical joirney early adopters and thanks for the videos.

Finally took it out the box this evening. I think I’m in love.
I STILL have no idea what this machine does! Sure, it sculpts sounds, granular, etc etc but even with the videos here - which Torso’s website very strangely only has one - nothing musical has come out of it. Just some nice sounds. What does it really do? On the website it lists three major features: 1. Tape Machine, 2. Effects Processor 3. MIDI controlled sampler, but there’s nothing to show how this works. Even their demo sounds, it’s like a long stream of single cycle waveforms before anything musical starts.
I think this is still very much a device on beta, and trying to find its way. Beautiful machine, but if Torso can’t even demo on their website what it does, I pulled the trigger to upgrade to Digitakt II instead.
Torso - you need a better website to market this machine.
You can use it to make music the same way as you would with any sampler. The main difference is that it happens to have a relatively unusual and powerful modulation (LFO/ADSR) setup, which lends itself to morphing soundcape or glitchy type stuff.
Looks like it would be fantastic for ambient.
I recently got a CB Mood MK2 pedal and strangely, this looks like it could almost achieve similar ambient sounds but with way more control.
Might not be the best tool for making 4/4 techno or hip-hop beats, but I’m sure folks will start proving me wrong there too.
As a sampler with infinite possibilities for 4 tracks of source material, besides other uses I’m expecting to use it to create collages of (probably) more acoustic instruments, sample the output and then chop.
Also interested in it as a 4x 6min stem ‘mastering’/remix device.
I’ve been using it strictly for a stand-alone 4/4 box. Nothing I’ve created has felt like a complete track in any way, but every project I’ve created, I’ve used one of the tracks to loop a one hit kick on a quarter note. It’s because that’s how I’ll be using it when I integrate it into my setup (and when MIDI sync/start/stop is released) and I’ve been curious about what kind of 1 or 2 bar loops I can create using two or three other tracks against a beat. It’s been great. I have no plans to use this as an ambient box. I’m hyper excited about the possibilities.
im a big timestretch enjoyer, cause its just such a cool tool for sound design, and the one of the s4 indeed sounds really good
That’ll be a shitshow. Looking forward to it.
