The initial ETA for the first batch was some time around March, now it’s mid-April.
Hi there! Maybe it’s and obvious question.
Does anyone know if in the S-4 it will be possible to send different samples to different midi channels so it can be paired with the Torso T-1?
Thank you!
As posted on Torso discord, this video from Oora is the best demo so far to showcase the Microcosm-alike scenario with the S4.
I’m really starting to like this device.
Can’t wait to see a proper workflow video!
Hi, I dont find Torso at Discord. Could you post the link! Thanks!
And the best news from today from there:
“you can create a feedback path by routing a track output back to its input, so this would give you a feedback loop with the granular device in it”
I like the sound of that option
I’m kind of hoping it has this capability too. If it has 4 tracks, and each track can load a sample, I don’t see why this wouldn’t be possible. Similarly, I’ve been saying it’d be great if it could function as an SOS looper as well, or something like a 4 track tape loop.
Thanks!
Got my pre-order in!
From their latest newsletter:
We want to start sharing some behind-the-scenes insights from the development team at Torso. We know a lot of you are eager to learn more about the S-4 and we give you a chance to follow the process. This is our first developer update to give you an overview of where we are and what’s next.
We have finalized the hardware and production is ongoing as planned. At the beginning of 2024, we sent a few production units out to beta testers to help us with the final stages of the development for firmware version 1.0
The current state of S-4 firmware:
We have everything working on the display, I/O, and user interface. Most interactions and general workflow have been implemented. The modulation system w. 3 different modulators are fully functional (more modulators to come). The 5 audio device slots (material, granular, filter, color, and space) each have fully functional audio devices:
Material
Tape: A monophonic tape-style looper / sample playback device
PolySampler: A polyphonic sampler device with a filter
PassThru: Simple pass-through device for live audio processing
Granular
TextureGen: A live granular texture generator with a “flangering” kind of sound when grains are overlapping
Filter
Resonator: A 48-band resonant filter bank where each band can be tuned to a musical scale.
Color
DriveAndCrush: A virtual analog drive, a one-knob compressor, and a bitcrush effect.
Space
DelayAndReverb: Delay with feedback and reverb.
Note that the names of the devices are not final
What we are working on right now: .
Finishing the Tape module, focusing on staying in sync with the timeline.
Project save/load is currently in the works
A config system for all the audio devices and global setting
MIDI clock sync
Planned for firmware version 1.0
While we are working hard to get everything ready for 1.0, a few features will not be available until a future update. We are planning regular updates for the S-4 which will expand and improve the feature set.
We plan to ship the first batch in mid-April (a few weeks delayed from the original plan)
The second batch is planned for late-May.
Stay tuned for the next update <3
“Finishing the Tape module”??
The tape module can be finished when it allows basic sample slicing with modulation destinations
It absolutely needs slicing. Have they mentioned this in the upcoming features?
It will not be a feature in 1.0 but they have apparently stated in the Discord that it is a planned feature in future updates.
April is starting to look mighty optimistic at this rate
hope they know how much this will contribute to the success of the project… there are alot of people who wouldn’t even think to ask do to the nature of the other features present and will just assume it’s there.
Yeah I agree. It is the difference between “wow this is the coolest little sampler I’ve ever used” and “this is more of a looper/FX box with polyphonic synth capabilities.”
Its hard to imagine that something like the 1010 Bitbox has sample slicing and this will not. To be fair to Torso, the Bitbox also did not have sample slicing until a post-release firmware update.
agreed… crazy potential here in that nothing besides the Torso S-4 has been compared to the sp-404mk2, digitakt, and microcosm in terms of replacement… if all goes well with it’s release I definitely wouldn’t mind waiting for the slicing features if it weren’t a long wait and if they made absolute certainty that it would not be a handicapped feature… the only real worry I have is I don’t even know how one gets to the point of developing something like this or the other features without thinking to add the slicing feature in front of the line…
it reminds me kind of how so many shocking omissions were present when native instruments maschine first came out it was a little surreal… but I’m always willing to give devs the benefit of the doubt because I’m happy to live in a world where they exist
Do we think there will be any videos before the first batch are delivered? I’m hoping OORA will be posting his one soon but I haven’t seen any hints that anyone else has upcoming videos. I’m really interested in this device but like others I don’t want to just see shimmer reverb/youtube ambient stuff, I’m hoping someone will get hands on one and post a video putting live vocals, drums and more rhythmic stuff through it. I’m also holding off pre ordering as I feel like it sounds a bit unfinished as it is right now, that concern could be easily alleviated with some in depth video reviews…
