Torso Electronics S-4 (sculpting sampler)

No need to call opposing opinions defensive :+1:

(Fwiw I havent preordered and am not even sure if this is up my alley)

I was referring to the earlier posts addressing my suggestion for a sequencer or audio clip arranger.

I’m pretty sure this has been stated as possible in one of the videos.

in all of Torso’s teasers, they are the ones trying to beat on it like it’s got drum pads so I think the features it currently has are great but if they want to use it like a groovebox like they do in their teasers they might want to add a metronome (unless they already have one) and a few groovebox QOL features like slicing

i’d love to do this too.

like mentioned earlier the 4pockets app posted above is a good indicator of what I’m hoping the S-4 can do… at it’s current price point

I’m pretty sure Torso said that slicing is coming, but it won’t be available upon release.

I relate to everything your saying. The S-4 ticks a lot of boxes for me as well, but I’m eager to see more of the workflow. There are lots of powerful samplers and sample manglers found in hardware and software form, but I get the feeling from what Torso has shown so far (of the S-4’s ui design and feature-set) that its quick workflow and performance abilities are where it will really shine.

I also can’t wait for the slicing feature to be implemented. I can imagine it will make the S-4 a really good companion to my M8, where the S-4 can handle more complex sample playback and looping while the M8 sends it polymetric midi sequences.

The only reason I’m here is because I’m toying with the notion of ordering one. Based on the functions we’re aware of, there are people who are happy and willing to pay the price.

Any missing features preventing me from ordering one shouldn’t matter to these people. Nobody needs to justify the reasons for ordering one if they are happy with what it has to offer.

Thank you for this.

Personally I am convinced the S4 is going to be a gamechanger and preordered.
(Finally the live-looping capabilities I always missed on the DT.)
Maybe not immediately upon release, but just give it a couple of months of firmware updates.

All comparisons here to existing samplers need to fail because it is going to be different in the best way possible. That is kind of the whole point.
And of course it lacks a sequencer because: The T1 is one of THE most innovative hardware products to be released in a looong time. Hook it up to that.
Elektron should consider buying Torso at this point, just to acquire the insanely creative knowledge connection between tech and music of the heads behind it. Seriously. The meager euclidian feature on the AR 1.7 is nowhere close to the depth of the T1s capabilities.

Here is an indication to my assumption:
ā€œIt’s reached the state where the team’s members can’t stop making jams and sharing on our internal chats just because it’s so much fun to play now, haha.ā€
(one of the devs on discord)

What I hear is that he basically describes the same effect that happened at id studios during the developement of Doom. At one point the team spent more time already playing with their own invention than developing it. And we all know what happened after the release of that title.

One more thought about the pricepoint. The S4 runs on a quadcore 1,5 GHz processor. That’s computing power for features and days to come. Boxes like DT can only dream of that at almost the same cost.

Anyway here’s the obligatory grain of salt :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
->.
Because in all seriousness none of us can predict the future or will be able to tell until release.

I preordered as well, I just trust Torso to make a good product. Figured why let the marketing campaign detract me from a product that reads like a device Iā€˜ve been looking & hoping for.

oooh bro, keep it going with the torso. the speed and versatility are insane. listen to some of this to get inspired: Stream Botec music | Listen to songs, albums, playlists for free on SoundCloud

all torso with faderfox, rytm and a black hole reverb.

I agree with everything except that elektron should buy torso. Something like that can stifle creativity.

You’ve shared some interesting thoughts on the appeal of the S-4. Let’s hope it turns out to be something special.

Maybe. Let’s hope so! I wish Torso all the best ofcourse, I would just never encourage anyone to buy or preorder a product based on future hopes and/or promises. (this is coming from an ex gamestop employee, lol)
I’ve been burned by too many video games and musical instruments with poor performance/firmware/QC and outright misleading marketing that then just never gets fixed and is subsequently abandoned.

Like you said, take everything with an obligatory grain of salt.

My mantra is to Always. Wait. For. Reviews.
I don’t even need to hear that the instrument is ā€œgoodā€ per se, all I care is that it f-cking works as intended. Whether it’s for me or not is for nobody but me to decide.

edit: Like others have said, I wish we could get a longer demo video demonstrating the workflow of the S-4, from naught to finished track, or at least something at least resembling a musical idea and not just an effect - with or without accompanying instruments for context.

No worries. It was more meant as a compliment for Torso. I think Elektron probably has their gameplan considering the developement of new products already laid out for the next 2-3 years already anyway.

True indeed.
But I didn’t preorder on the premise of hoping for the addition of future capabilities. The described specs for the initial release were enough for me.

Same here, enough for me, as for the T1 back in the days.

The S4 uses a Raspberry Pi (presumably running some flavour of linux) so this comparison is apples and oranges.

Yeah, point taken, fair enough.
