The factory samples are included in the Firmware ZIP-files.
Are you saying when you record it to DISC there is no fuzzy noise?
Are you using headphones and USB audio? Or even headphones and have USB connected to a computer?
Original issue was coming out of both headphone and main outs. I rewired everything and also did factory reset and so far everything seems OK. Started using DIN MIDI as well, although this still is converted from USB to DIN, also made sure that charging was turned off on synth. Fingers crossed ![]()
I think if Torso if were to ever release a new upgraded hardware, they should really pay more attention to the tactility of this device. It is a āsculptingā sampler but somehow the hardware connection between the user and device - thereās a disconnect and thatās why thereās so many complains about the encoder. The metaphoric āchiselā just doesnāt feel solid in sculpting the sound. I mean, itās not unusable but so many times what I thought was a small turn, made the sound jump by quite a leap.
I donāt know, maybe thatās just me. I can still get the sounds finally but just not as enjoyable, or the feeling of precision was lagging. Still an amazing sampler but hopefully if there was a 2.0 hardware theyād pay more attention to the hardware-user interfacing.
I think youāre exactly right about the hardware. It just doesnāt feel like a $1,000 device.
Iām one of the people who had hardware issues with mine. (Headphone jack) I returned it and didnāt bother with getting a replacement unit. But Iāve been watching all of this very closely, because what this machine does is right up my alley, and I really do want one, but I want it to feel more āfinishedā before I buy another one.
Do you think the CME H12MIDI Pro will work for this?
Oh thanks
This is interesting to hear, and I know youāre not alone in this view.
For some reason I took to the S-4 like a fish to water, I felt an immediate connection to the hardware and the workflow. I love the display and all of the visual feedback. I like the looseness of the encoders, I feel like theyāre a little more sensitive or responsive (I can nudge them gently to move in small increments, or whip them around to jump across the whole parameter range).
On a specific workflow note, the ability to hold the Mod button and turn a destination encoder to assign modulation is just brilliant. Thatās the kind of thing that creates a really nice connection between my conscious intention and the physical implementation, kinda like patching a modular synth. There are other little tricks (like pressing an encoder, or press and turn gestures) that work well.
Iām sure there are improvements that could be made but for some reason this version hit the sweet spot with me. Simple yet effective. I just wanted to offer this view as well, I know the S-4 has flaws but for me, the things it gets right, it gets really right.
Oh the UI is great. The graphics are pretty sharp in conveying the information. Iām talking about the hardware side of things, specifically the encoders. It is not unusable but maybe I prefer a stiffer or more granular feel in its precision. I think the best encoders are still from Elektron. Or maybe Iām so used to it. The knob turns are more or less where you expect it to be, and it has the right amount of resistance and jumping in steps with Func pressed.
I have to disagree. I find the encoders on the current line of Elektron gear not great at all. They work best with small, controlled turns. When you turn quickly back and forth the parameter values start to move inconsistently to the point where they feel slippy. This is compounded with a device like Tonverk which has a slight latency across the entire interface.
I donāt get any of that at all with my S4. It is very responsive and consistent. A quick turn will increment quickly, and a slow turn will increment slowly.
What I donāt like is the inconsistency when changing values on parameters with only a handful of values like Speed (by default only 7 values). Itās too easy to go from one extreme to the other with barely a turn. Parameters like Dry/Wet with 0-100 values work great and have the best feel overall.
There are also no UI latency issues with the S4, turning the knobs feels very responsive, though I have heard of people maxing out the tracks and polyphony and having slowdown. I rarely use the sampler so havenāt experienced it though.
I noticed this myself. I thought that at some point you were able to press the knb and set it to free, so you could get more precise with it⦠Maybe thinking about pitch?
Yeah you can change the number of values (from octaves up to chromatic and all the way to free), and it works great when there are enough values to create a finer variation.
Itās fine overall though, you learn which params are coarse and which are fine.
Yeah, sorry, I was work. You are right. Speed. There is no pitch. But, I thought when I first aquired the S-4 that speed could be adjusted to free on Disk mode, but it canāt and that would be one of my most wanted features. Of course I found that you can do it on Tape, but like you said the values jump super fast, and itās hard to get to an accurate number. Mine goes to -2, then -6, then -7. Iāll spend a few minutes when I have time to contact Torso about this. Who doesnāt like to slow stuff down just a tiny bit? In Disk, itās -12, -24, -36.
It is what it is, but I can only dream.

I was wondering, whether there would be an official Torso software release to go with the S4, but if there was, then it looks like someone beat them to it. Iām very intrigued.

Thanks for that constructive standpoint that does not deal with past problems or first superficial insights, but with the recent development and the experience you“ll get today. I just startet to learn more about the s4 and am quite fascinated for now. Seems like a great happy accident machine for me, I like the percussive aspects it seems to offer alongside the performance mode and scene capturing.
My outputs were broken, Torso were super helpful and the shop I got mine from also.
They were going to replace mine but had no new units so gave me a refund so I ordered another. First thing Iāve technically bought twice and would prefer not to be without, best music thing Iāve bought other than ableton.
Not that I want to continue the discussion on the encoders as itās been beaten to death, however the new unit feels more solid, my last ones were pretty wobbly so thatās a nice bonus.
