How do you set it up so each track is routed to a track on S4? All my OP1F tracks seem to be routed to any track that I hit record on.
Set the OP-1f USB Mode to 8-Ch and each channel on the S4 to Bypass (ie: live audio). Then you select which Track you want to send to by selecting it in the OP-1f Tape (OP-1f Tape Track 2 = S4 Track 2 etc.) And if you have audio recorded on each Track in the Tape then these will be routed accordingly when you press play.
It’s pretty cool. Sadly it only works one way (no multitrack recording from the S4 onto each Tape track).

Well shit, after two glasses of wine I guess I’m back on this thing again. Just ordered one.
I’ve been longing for a proper sample mangler ever since I sold OT about 2 years ago. Tried S4 liked a lot of it, hated some of it (mostly the coming soon functions)
With the new functions and and actually using it for what it is and not for what I want to be, I’m hoping this will be a keeper.
I actually loved working on it, so immediate but I’m gonna try and stay away from the resonator as it makes everything sound samey.

It’s really fun from the get go for me. Right now it really reminds me of working with modular, where you can easily get into unknown territory (but if you get to that sweet spot you can record the main out by pressing two buttons, so you seldomly loose those moments), just recording audio into it and mangling the hell out of said audio. I think you will enjoy.

It’s an immediate love for me, really happy with it.
It’s excellent and the resonator can be used subtly, it could use some different modes for sure but there is so much more to the S4 sound wise.

I almost never use the resonator…or then, occasionally, subtle, very subtle, with some modulation… Lots to discover or different ways of using this sampler outside the resonator…
the release (decay? I’m away from my s4 atm) on the resonator is the main culprit. if you keep that at zero you can use it as a more traditional filter
Yeah I think it’s called decay. Which creates the bell like tones. My main problem though is that I never listen to my inner Ryuichi Sakamoto and use space. My intrusive thoughts about using everything all at once always wins. And on a device like this, that is a recipe for chaos

yea i think that’s only natural. similar vibe with the OT when i first got it, felt compelled to try to use it all. I reckon it’s part of the process. I’ve been doing the same with the S4

Yeah I guess you’re right. I wonder why I can never shake off the feeling of needing to use every function and every track on a device for me to justify its use…

I was planning on getting into them this weekend.
I can see the case for both, that would be a nice config option for sure.

I think this is the key to the S-4
At a high level I’ve only seen two opinions from people that have used the S-4 about whether or not they like it:
- I wanted it to do this other thing that I thought I could do x, y, and z with, but it doesn’t work*
- I just turn it on and explore and create. I always end up with something I love and this is my desert island gear now
*a lot of time x, y, and z are completely possible if you learn how to approach doing them on the S-4, instead of wanting it to work exactly like some other peice of gear
