Too fast

dear all,

I have a strange experience with room acoustics. I did the sound for a dance performance, the sound was very much tailored for the room of the premiere, many patterns where written in this room. now on tour at the venue where we perform some synth patterns feel to fast for me.

it’s a difficult room with lots of reverberation and strange bass response, we fixed most issues today with repositioning speakers.

still, some patterns feel too fast, lowering bpm doesn’t help, simpler patterns, less elements gave me a better feeling in this room.

has anyone experienced similar issues? every room sounds different and I like to play with it, I never had this feeling of something being too fast before and would really like to understand.

have a day,
boris

everything i make sounds much faster when i hear it on speakers vs headphones. wish i had a better explanation why that is though, good luck.

It probably has to do with the reflections you’re hearing. Just like when something is played early or late it can give a feeling of rushing or dragging.

Moving the speakers is probably the best you can do without treating the room.

You could also attempt to eq the master signal some to reduce some of the problem frequencies and lower the volume of early reflections in the process.

Will the room be filled with people later? That might help in the end.

thanks for your reply, we had two shows tonight, it worked, with audience the sound is definitely better. I think the proportions of the room are not the best for audio, the venue is known to be difficult, the room is very high, the top speakers are close to the ceiling and the subs are on the floor, I think I would have preferred the tops closer to the audience, more direct. but I don’t know, I’m not an expert in room acoustics, anyway I learned a lot today.

and of course another explanation that has nothing to do with room acoustics is that I’m very tired, travelling and covid takes a lot of energy.

I think you’re right. Direct sound is always going to be better sounding than reflections.
