100% concur, this is pretty much what drew me into TV. I’ve got Push and Move and the ecosystem aspect of it is amazing for fully polished tracks. But I missed having a single box that you just turn on and zone out with, and potentially just record the 2 bus out of. This is a hobby after all! TV has brought that tactile fun back to the table for me.
Currently, (and this is my first Elektron device) I’m really enjoying it. My partner said that I usually have this “hmmm not sure” face on me when trying new gear, but I don’t this time (apparently…)
The good: it sounds awesome, and as a noob to Elektron I find the workflow pretty intuitive. The effects are fantastic and it genuinley feels like a bit of an all rounder in a good way. I’m using it as a standalone piece. Like others, I’m using it with one shots. While I want them to fix multi sampling because that’s how the box is advertised, that was the least exciting part of it for me. It’s not a DAW in a box, but it’s a very powerful sampler that has a focus and can also make full tracks. That’s a nice sweet spot right there.
The question mark: Obviously features are only worth it if you use them. I really liked the look of DTII and was more or less sold on it, and there are some aspects of it that I still like the look of. When I made a track the other night, I did use the effects, plus the ability to sequence them. I used polyphony and transpose, and other things. I could make something fairly similar on the DT and finish it ITB. Though, I imagine some of the TV features might feel like frustrating omissions on the DTII once the initial buzz of its simplicity had faded. Plus, you can “fake” slicing on the TV (or use pre-prepped slices in a sub-track), but you can’t fake the additional FX, polyphony, arp or any of the other bells and whistles from Tonverk without other devices or workarounds. So not much of a question mark really! All that is to say I wanted an Elektron and I landed on this one because it’s 30% more money for a heck of a lot more useful features.
Product lineup ramble: The lack of some popular features such as slicing, granular (which seems inevitable given the easter egg) and timestretch seem to divide the forum a fair bit. If “the Ton…somethings” are the new platform that everything will be built on, will Elektron keep slicing & timestretch as the Digitakt’s one USP? I can see that happening. If TV had all the features of DTII, why buy DTII (aside from lower price)? But then, hampering a product with a higher premium could be an issue if they want to bring new people into buying Elektron gear. Maybe either DTII keeps slicing and tim-stretch exclusively, or TV gets it, (but not for a few years- at which point DTII would get a price drop.) They’ve probably got a bit of thinking to do to make this… verk?!
Overall though, as a single “throw it on the desk” piece - I’ve been having loads of fun with it. Probably should just crack on and worry a bit less about the direct comparisons.
Side note on multisampling: I wonder if some interesting players from the multi sample world might get involved here (Luftrum, Slate & Ash, Noon, Void & Vista etc.) I could see them all making some interesting multi samples that people here would appreciate.
TV is a polyphonic instrument, and its tracks are gainstaged to handle polyphonic playing of sounds. If everything was as hot as on a monophonic device, you’d run into distortion whenever you tried to play chords
The default velocity to volume curve seems pretty dynamic. Make sure all trigs you want turned up have max velocity. Also max out track level and individual subtrack AMP page level
If you want the kick to punch through, dedicate an individual output and put a compressor fx to it inside TV. Problem solved. In fact, I believe I will be able to “out kick” my Syntakt with the TV, if I spend enough time and outboard processing on the samples (RD-9 into API, into a 1176, into a tube comp, onto 1/4" tape anyone?)
Ok nice. Have to add a lot of the stock sounds are really really good. There are some really nice 909 style kicks that I’m using straight from the elektron folder. Also the stock multisampled instruments are great, some of the best bass sounds I have heard on a groove box.
Maybe try and put it on the whole mix - instantly colors the sound. I personally like it -
Also another tip I just learned. The TV doesn’t have pattern mutes but you can just turn down the LEVEL meter from pattern to pattern. Instant smooth mutes.
Been playing on the TV for a few days now and I’m blown away with how great it is. This feels like the best of the Elektron boxes I love.
That said I would love to jam on some Pattern Mute mode. Also would love a way to control volume on all the Tracks, Buses, Sends, & Mix via Midi. I’m sure it’s in an update or an error but I couldn’t get it to work with my controller.
I am personally very fond of some of the cinematic instruments in the factory lib. Many one note wunderkid patches in there which I could listen to all day
These are the phase shifts I was talking about earlier. Most graphic EQs introduce a lot of phase shift when abused, it can give you a “vintage” feeling sound. I need to give these a try myself…
