Tonverk: User Thread

One cycle late pattern changes is a known issue…

yeah am i right that this has been a known issue for all elektrons or just tonverk? cheers

Could someone confirm exactly what the modulation envelope does? I get that, like an LFO, it modulates a destination effect, but what does that envelope cover - a single trig? The pattern?

It’s like an amp or filter envelope, but with a user-defined destination.

I get the logic behind this, but the fact that you cannot zoom into a sample (other than at the moment you first record it) makes using the TV as an 8-track recorder/player less than ideal IMO. If you record a longer section of audio (say 32 bars long) then decide you only want to use the middle 4 bars, you end up squinting at a tiny waveform display that cannot be zoomed and essentially being forced to guess where that 4 bar section begins. I have tried this workflow and, for me, it was just too annoying and frustrating.

The more I use the Tonverk, the more I’m realising that it is missing some basic quality of life tools and options that are present in all other modern Digi boxes.

I don’t mean functionality that exists in the Digitakt (like slicing) that would be great if added to the TV, and I don’t mean functionality that no Digi box has that IMO is missing in a flagship sampler, like the ability to zoom into a sample for editing (not possible ATM other than immediately after recording a sample).

I’m focusing here on really simple things that every Digi box has that the TV does not have (and I genuinely don’t understand why it doesn’t have these things).

For example, the ability to lock a Project so you don’t overwrite it accidentally. On every Digi box I’ve owned, there is a Project Management sub-screen where you can lock a Project that you’ve created as a template (for example).

The TV does not have this option. Why not?

On every Digi box (AFAIK) the list of Modulation destinations you can send a LFO to are neatly clustered on the screen, with the main category on the left side of the screen (e.g. “Filter”) and the subcategory on the right side of the screen (e.g. “Filter Env Depth”). It makes it fast and simple to get to the Mod destination you want.

The TV just has a long list of every Mod destination with no split between category title on the left and sub-category on the right. It is just that much less intuitive to scroll through. And when it comes to Mod destinations for Subtracks, the single stack list is incredibly long and unwieldy. It is really bad UI design.

Preset management is another example. The TV is still (despite 1.41) is much less capable than other Digi boxes when it comes to Preset tagging and filtering. Going through Presets on a ST, DT2, DN2 is fast and intuitive, but Multisample Presets in particular on the TV seem to be either Keys or Drums only, which is not that helpful. I’m now at the point where I don’t bother looking for Multisample Presets because life is too short to scroll through dozens of wildly different sounds that all sit under “Keys” category.

I’d like to think these are relatively easy fixes for Elektron. I don’t know that of course, but I cannot believe these things are impossible to address.

Then there are the other issues in this thread where the TV differs from other Digi boxes in ways that don’t really make sense, like Mutes management, Program Change timing etc. Some of these may be bugs, but others do feel like design oversights IMO.

You can filter presets a bit better now. Press left arrow in preset screen, then select tags, then the tag that you want (e.g. Bass).

Starting to think about moving my Tonverk on. Bought it at launch, and other than a faulty unit that had to be replaced, I’ve not had any of the issues I see in these threads.
I’ve had some fun with it, and noodled countless hours away, but it’s not made it into a finished track in that time.

The FX are a mixed bag, some are great, others much less so, bordering on pointless. The addition of both grainer and wave finder really captured a lot of attention on here, yet I’m completely underwhelmed with both, I’ve not managed to get a decent sound out of either of them.

Busses are a bit meh, would have preferred 2 busses and 10 tracks.

I find myself looking at Push 3, but that would involve a jump from Bitwig to Live, which might be a bridge too far, despite the obvious advantages.

Anyone else dumped Tonverk for Push?

Man, I think both of those are huge upgrades and I have found them helpful in getting tracks finished. Check out @Oxenholme deep dives into WaveFinder. It’s motivated me to use just that machine to make whole tracks, drums and all. But if the TV doesn’t gel with you, maybe it’s just not for you. I haven’t been so pleased with a machine as a standalone writing tool in a long time, for what I like to do. I agree the chorus/phaser/flanger fx can be a bit lackluster, but I still use the chorus a fair bit on certain things. It’s just when I want things to float across the stereo field a bit. Depth on full, width on full, speed all the way down. Can fatten things up nicely, even though I’d love it if Elektron take things further with it.
I dunno…had mine from the first week of release and loved it from the start and love it even more now. I have a huge wishlist too, but I’m still thrilled with the machine

I think that flanger chorus and phaser are very weak. I would love to see a rework of that fxs

I think this is part of my dilemma, TV is undoubtedly capable of sounding excellent, but I seem to struggle to push it into the directions I want it to go, I usually end up with something that sounds interesting, but ultimately not the sound in my head.

I think I also would just rather reach for my Iridium if I want wavetables or granular, lack of sofa friendliness not withstanding. Same goes for the multisamples, I baked some of my favourite synth patches in and dislike how static and lifeless they become, I’d rather just play the synth.

And the Filterbank such a non-entity you forgot to even mention it.

My take on this topic. After months using it, is the most inspiring machine I’ve ever had. Polyend tracker mini and TV are the TOP ones for me.

Yes, agree.

Flanger, phaser, chorus, and filterbank need a rework for sure.
