Tonverk Use Case Questions

I’ve read a lot and watched lots of videos but figured a few direct questions would be more efficient, because I’m struggling.

  1. If I sequence note data in Studio One to use Tonverk as a synth/rompler without recording any note data into the Tonverk, can I still do fx trigs in Tonverk on a track level to sequence the modulation/filters/inserts/etc?

  2. What is the workflow like for integrating pedals? I’d still love to use my Chase bliss/obne/hologram etc pedals incorporated with the Tonverk sounds and internal fx.

  3. Is it possible and worth resampling back into the Tonverk as loops? I know it has record on play with fixed length.

Yes, yes and yes!

  1. Yes, as long as you map the required CC messages, it shouldn’t be a problem.

  2. It depends on what you want to achieve, but I would run the AUX output from the TV and then route it back in. That way you can use your pedal as a insert effect.

  3. Yes, that’s possible—it ultimately depends on what you’re trying to accomplish.

I’m not in front of my Tonverk right now, but it’s also possible to use a send track, remove the effect on it, route it to the CD output going into your effects pedal, and then bring the signal back through the inputs.

Check the Tonverk page on Elektrons site, it details these routing options. I use a pedal as a send effect, the routing on TV great.

Yes, but there’s a difference between insert and send FX.

For a send-style setup you usually route a Send FX track to OUT CD, then return the pedal to the inputs so it mixes with the main output.

If you route a track directly to OUT CD, that’s more like an insert, since the signal is removed from the main mix. (I’v corrected my previous post, to avoid confusion)

No one said otherwise ^^

You can do both and it’s great

Thank you everyone!

Regarding #1, I don’t want to sequence the Tonverk FX in studio one, just note data. If Tonverk notes are being fed via studio one with no note trigs can I still use the step sequencer for fx/filter/modulation trigs?

Yes. Just use trigless trigs (FUNC + TRIG) and make sure Studio One is sending transport and clock to TV. Those trigs are yellow and have no notes but can be used to p-lock stuff.

(Haven’t tried this setup myself, so I don’t know if it adds too much latency)

They do not even need that; you may have misread them. The OP explicitly states ‘trig,’ so it seems the internal sequencer is running in the scenario. They’re asking about what we call in Octratrack speak trigless trigs.

Yes, OP, you can slave the Tonverk via midi sync and use trigs just for FX changes (or any parameter) without triggering the notes. Most Ekektron boxes have a specific trig type that allows for decoupling the ‘note on’ triggers from parameter only trigs.

Yes thank you. I remember trigless trigs from the OT, but couldn’t remember if you had to have notes sequenced.

Thanks everyone! I hope to have one next week.

Have a search for Chase Bliss for others’ experiences. I had no problems sending stereo to and from an Onward and it sounded great: it was just a bit much. You can p-lock the routing on a track e.g. route a Track to Main Mix by default but send specific trigs to Out 1/2 to the pedal. Then route the output from the pedal back in to e.g. a Bus track that’s always on or can be tweaked with its own p-locks or FX.

I have an onward I’m looking forward to trying it with as well as mood mkii
