I don’t know if this is how it works. Apple had to change the USB port to C because it’s the only port on the machine that allows you to charge the machine. But most products still have a dedicated PSU and some of them come with an additional USB port for data transfer, not for power. My guess is that you can use different kinds of USB ports in that scenario. Otherwise, Digitone II and Digitakt II would also need a USB C port.

What seems like an easier explanation to me is that USB C is just a lot more widespread and many people like it. It also doesn’t take up much extra space and is probably cheap. So it makes sense that Elektron just puts more USB ports on a machine that’s a bit bigger. You can also see that in other synths like Nina, which comes with a whole strong different USB inputs. Would make even more sense if Tonverk had some way of accessing samples for granular or wavetables via USB.

Maybe we just can start a bid at Polymarket? WDYT…

I’d prefer Toneverk: Afterwerk!

Honky TonkVerk. (Always detuned synth.)

I still think Tonverk will eventually be called Klämrisk or Varmkorv.

Without wanting to be a party-pooper, ezbot said:

There is no Toneverk. I’ve talked to Elektron about it a bunch.”

That’s right. No Toneverk.

Tonverk on the other hand…

EzBot is just an influencer. If you wanted to influence a bunch of customers that figured out your plans into thinking they were totally off base, what would you do? :upside_down_face: :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I like Ezbot. I do not know if there will be a Tonverk. But if he really was in the loop on anything regarding the Tonverk, I don’t think this is a statement that he would have made.

Is there any precedent for Elektron or any company continuing to pursue a trademark after a leak/denying that the product will exist? I know there was digistrike etc, but did that really make it that far in the journey?

I think EZbot could be legally obligated to lie/NDAed, leaving legal wiggle room in his statement so that it is “technically true” (ie Tonverk doesn’t “exist” yet but only because it’s not out), or perhaps he’s out of the loop because Elektron need their OT expert to keep helping sell OT which will not be discontinued. Or maybe he’s fully correct, but why would Elektron keep pursuing the trademark?

And why 4000 posts on it.

I know I am part of the obsessive frenzy so I’m happy to be wrong here- just looking for logical reasons I’m wrong about what seems to be a clear inference that it is a forthcoming product

I’ve got no position on the EzBot thing. He’s a second-hand source, which is a heck of a lot closer than anyone posting here. But second-hand sources are not immune from misunderstanding or miscommunication. So ¯\(ツ)

But I really do want to dive into this “convince your customers they’re wrong” sentiment. So many people seem to believe Elektron has some sort of vested interest in deceiving their fans. What possible up-side is there to this behavior? They can announce a product people didn’t expect? Would that translate into sales? What do you suppose sells more, the surprise drop of a synth no one’s ever heard of, or selling a unique product coveted by professionals over the course of a decade? The day-one “surprise!” orders are a drop in the bucket.

And what would they be trading to maintain this “surprise” that everyone seems to think is so important to them? Their credibility! If they convinced customers there was no Tonverk and then released Tonverk, aren’t a number of people going to feel lied to? Again, what do you think hurts sales more? Launch of a fantastic synth but details were leaked? Or having customers that feel lied to?

Last year there was so much talk about what Tonverk was and its imminent release that Elektron felt like they needed to step in. And what did they say? That some hardware they make is eventually released but some never sees the light of day. And Tonverk seems to be in that gray area.

If they wanted to run the kind of psyop people are talking about, they could have just lied right then and said it was not real (or that it was!). Instead they told the truth; they can’t commit to it happening or not. Why not take them at their word?

I have domains I’ve registered for projects I stopped working on decades ago. Every time they come up for renewal, I think to myself “yeah, I might come back to that” and buy another year.
