I’ve been living in Sweden, playing music for over 50 years and I have never seen the term tonverk used. It would be called musikstycke, musikverk or orkesterverk (if it’s orchestral).
I think Elektron chose Tonverk because it’s not commonly used for anything else but most people would still be able to guess what it’s for.
literally a mashup of the two, double strike out for “design innovation” too
If we assume that the tonverk might be able to load any kind of (digital) machine that can be bought separately from elektron, as some users have suggested here, wouldn’t it be great if the DTII could do the same? The machine architecture is there already, and the UI under the knobs is almost the same.
Then the main difference between the devices would just be that the tonwork has got all the fancy stuff like busses, sequenceable FX, multiple outputs, keyboard, polyphonic tracks. DTII would be the more budget friendly option and tonverk would represent the more high end device. I’m just guessing based on cuckoo’s statements that the DTII is the first elektron on a new platform, so this would fall in line and might make sense from a business perspective. Want sy bits on your DTII? Go to the online shop and get it. Tonverk would come with most of the machines pre-installed to justify the (assumed) higher price. No idea how realistic that is, but I would dig it. I’d like some of the syntakts digital machines on my DTII.
The fact that it’s very uncommon doesn’t change its meaning. But I agree: It’s probably been a very deliberate choice as ton or tone (or even toon in my language) mean similar things.
What if there will be multiple Tonverks, as in a synth and a sampler version, like the Electribe-R and Electribe-S? ![]()
You mean ve motions vill ve all verky?
Yeah, but at least the Elektron design team are laughing this time…
I had this vision too.
what would ot3 even be tho. just more ot in one box?
This could not have gone more hilariously.
I like keeping the keyboard and sequencer buttons separate. The OP-Z got this right, and while I like that implementation more than the tonverk prototype, I’m still happier with them separate than how it is shared on the digi boxes. That alone lets me know this is a step above the Digis and maybe slotted below the analogs.
(Just my opinions everyone!, I know nothing, nothing stated above is intended as fact, please don’t let it offend you deeply)
Does anyone think this could actually be related to either Abletons Oct 8 Move announcement or Roli’s Oct 8th announcement?
It was mentioned on the table:
I agree re: the value of keeping them separate, especially if the workflow allows you to hold a chord with your left hand and then place that chord onto a step your right hand…
I’m guessing with so many other manufacturers having caught up with Elektron’s unique p-locks and trigs probability, the SEQ LAYER could be some sort of automated Octatrack A/B slider - allowing to slide in patterns or sequences. The MOTION LAYER could be a sophisticated automation feature - like fading in and out a delay creating “motion”. They have to up their game.
…ot, as it is, since way more than a decade by now, remains that universal sonic swissknife mastertool, that let’s u fool around with audio content in endless ways…and there’s is no such thing anywhere elese to find to be a truu substitute to that…
even it’s most obvious and simple function to just drop a stereofile of any length to one of it’s 128 static slots to just let it run, while u get ur head and hands free to twiddle anything else, remains an outstanding and unique thing, not one other brand ever accomplished in such a simple but geeenius 'n flawless way…
and since all this is such an old concept, there could be many easy tasks u could just add to that cake to create some kind of final solution to the whole sonic game…
like replacing the cf card with a more up to date ram/+drive/mass storage solution…
make it’s realtime looper capabilties more hands on, come up with a variety of new fx algos to insert them into more flexible signal chains, update it’s sequencer handling with latest swedish inventions already common on all other devices, implement new midi gimmicks for it’s midi sequencer engine all daws came up with recently, explore the digital/analog hybrid planet for the master out…etc, etc…
so, basically yes…“just” more ot in one box…
but from what i can see so far from the first ui renders of toneverk, i guess, ot’s most essential advantages will be covered by it already…and since the ot was always that last thing remaining from a company that does not really exist anymore, since todays elektron has really moved on long time ago, toneverk will most likely take care of that old ot “problem” child thing…
Agree this is a strong possibility. App Store are full of subscription apps now. Akai does a good business selling synth and efx modules besides expansion packs. Although I love how Elektron have given us free machines with their updates, their new CEO may want to think how to max out their widget.
The thread isn’t a “madhouse”. People are just excited to discuss the possibilities. It’s just a lively fast moving conversation, some ideas will turn out to be wrong - that’s ok.
If some people need to check themselves out and complain elsewhere… fine, complainers gonna stick together I guess.
Hi there, thought we’d chime in.
It’s great to see the speculation in the threads even if things occasionally drift a little off-piste. At any given time there are a number of prototypes in various stages of development. It would be strange if we didn’t have any since creating music machines is what we love doing. Some eventually see the light of day and others stay in the proto stage.
But… we do have other fun hardware things in the pipeline. And Overbridge for Digitakt II is soon done for some multi-streaming audio madness. So, speak soon.
Amazing, thanks for the update!
