This will probably be the case for any 2.4 GHz wireless product that avoids FHSS standards like WiFi or Bluetooth. The problem is that all wireless devices are crammed into the same narrow bit of 2.4 GHz spectrum (and some in 900 MHz and 5 GHz, but most are 2.4GHz). Both Bluetooth and WiFi incorporate frequency hopping spread spectrum, and have been updated over the decades.
FHSS necessarily introduces latency and jitter, so if you want to minimize latency one strategy would be to drop FHSS. But then you are much more susceptible to interference. The TMA-2 headphones will probably be fine in a residential-house home studio, or an industrial studio space. They will probably perform poorly in an urban apartment or densely packed office building.
So unfortunate, this coating that is on everything from headphones to Nikon grips, to Ableton Pushes, to MPCs, to Elektron MK2 buttons.
Bahumbug!
Does anyone have a recommendation for other wireless, negligible latency without such coating?. Open back would be preferred but not required.
I’m just thinking about the future mostly. Spent some time recently thinking about something to treat myself to toward the end of the year (or beyond), and time off from work and/or nice wireless cans were what I landed on.
Just got these but unfortunately I am having serious connection issues. They work fine until I put them on my head, at which point they beep a couple of times and then no audio. Take them off and then audio again! Is my huge noggin blocking the signal??
Edit: after moving the transmitter from the back of my mixer to sitting on top of my mixer, the headphones are now working flawlessly (fingers crossed). Literally only moved them 12 inches. Maybe interference from Philips Hue lights?? Or something inside the rear of the mixer (Behringer Wing).
I’ve been using these for a couple of weeks now. I use a lot of hardware and being able to move around my studio freely without rolling over headphone cables in my chair or accidentally yanking the cable etc is worth the price of admission.
They sound pretty good to me, I have DT770’s, DT990’s, Audeze Mobeus and the HEDD’s and I would say these wireless headphones easily compete with the Beyerdynamics and the Audeze in usefulness. They sound good to me, I don’t trust them so much but I use them to make music / sound design, not mix with.
Build quality seems OK, the cups have a really nice soft material, they very light and each part is replaceable which is nice but they don’t seem so robust enough to carelessly chuck in a backpack and handle roughly.
I also got them a couple of days ago and I am really happy with them. The first time I can move around in my small room and play with the synths…. Without knocking the headphone off my head when stepping on the cable.
Of course you cannot run around the apartment but for what I need them for everything is cool. Also being able to switch to Bluetooth and use them with Mac or iPhone is a plus.
Pressure on the ears is a little too high but still ok.
Edit: maybe I should also mention that they sound very good. Better than my DT770 IMHO
The latency is good. Of course my subjective opinion. I sometimes play guitar and that works good as well, I mention it because latency is important when picking or playing some melodies.
I received this yesterday. I have been using two headphones, sennheiser HD650 and HD-25 several years extensively and I love sennheisers a lot. I think TMA-2 is not on par with any of my sennheisers soundwise. I didn’t buy this to replace my sennheisers but it would have been nicer if it were somewhat on par with at least HD-25. I feel airpod gen 3 sounds better than TMA-2 imho…
and the hiss noise when connected to transmitter is very noticeable and not quiet. I hope this would be improved with firmware upgrade or something if possible.
but still I won’t get rid of it anytime soon. low latency wireless ability with standalone transmitter was what I was looking for and walking around my studio and controlling stuffs wireless are very free feeling indeed. If apple came up with new airpod pro with lossless transmitter and low latency in the future, that would be a instant buy imho
16ms is not bad (from the headphones), definitely ok Id say…
but if your doing something via a computer… you then have latency also from your audio interface, so that could be another 15-25ms…(depending on your setup etc)
so you could be up to the 30-40+ms … which perhaps is starting to push it?
I guess, I could test this out, by adding a bunch of latency in the daw (increase buffer size) and seeing if it’s ok.
but Id be interested to hear if someone is doing similar, as it seems direct monitor is fine… just not sure if you start compounding other latencies.
(yes, I know, most of the time I use direct monitoring … but its not always possible if I want to use daw based fx, or if I want to include pre-recorded audio from the daw)
I definitely like the idea of wireless though… my gear is a bit spread out, and having the cable dangling around is far from ideal … that said, is does work ok, so perhaps Im solving a problem that only exists since w+ is an option
Maybe they are not perfect but the really do a good job and I have been waiting a long time for something like this And I am old so I do not hear any uncomfortable noise
Regarding the hiss: you need to lower the volume on the headphones and boost at the source. It s a balancing act as too much gain at the source will lead to distortion and the setting is not persisted when you power them off which is annoying.
Anyway, I think these are fantastic for producing when moving around multiple pieces of gear in the studio. For mixing, I’m still using a wired set of AKG K702. When I’m out of the studio with a single piece of gear, I prefer to use DT-880 Pros as I don’t need the wireless aspect.
