Third Party MicroUSB Cables that work with Model:Cycles?

I’ve just bought a 2nd hand Model:Cycles that didn’t come with it’s MicroUSB cable. I’ve bought the two soundpacks from Elektron to transfer on to it, but have found that none of my MicroUSB cables will work. Basically my PC and Transfer just cannot see the M:C.

Looking at this forum I see that others recommend only using the original cable, but with shipping this is looking quite expensive (around £20+) for a MicroUSB cable.

Has anyone found a third party cable that works?

Interesting, what’s special about the original cable? I’d expect any MicroUSB cable to work…

Yeah, I would’ve thought the same, but I’ve seen posts here saying that using the Elektron cable worked, where other cables didn’t.

The M:C I have bought is incredibly clean and in very good condition, but potentially I guess the MicroUSB port could be blocked with fluff or something. I’ve only just thought to give that a look. Maybe a gentle brushing and some contact cleaner.

I would say that you might have a « power only » micro usb cable.
If you have windows os, that’s easy to know if it’s power only because no sound is made when you plugged the device if it’s power only.

And if it has data it should make a sound and a pop up appear saying something about the device. Transfer app is the next step, first you need to see if windows detect the Elektron device.

You don’t need a Elektron cable to make it work. Just try different one and at some point you will find one which works.

Hiya. No I eliminated all those a year or so ago! Those are the kind of cables you get when you buy some rechargeable bike lights, or something like that. I put a bit of coloured tape around all of those I have.
Basically I had a session where I went through all my MicroUSB and USB-C cables and figured out all the ones that are charge-only and put tape on them.
I appreciate the suggestion though.

I did find that original Elektron cables worked better in an environment where there was a lot of electrical/electronic noise. If you’re using a laptop see if you can take it and the M:C somewhere electrically quiet (say, bedroom) and see if your cable works there. If it does, you can figure out if you really need a well-made cable (like the Elekron one) or if you can make do.

Just checked with both of those cable and model cycle is seen by Windows 10.
Ugreen cable from Amazon I would say.

Thanks. That’s good to know. I have tried 3 MicroUSB cables on my M:C and none of them work.
I have tested all 3 cables with another unrelated device (an old FreeStyle Libre Scanner) and with that device the Device Manager I have open on screen immediately reloads to show that a new device is detected.
With the M:C in OS Upgrade Mode I get nothing in the Device Manager at all when I plug it in with these 3 cables.
I might get one of these Ugreen cables from Amazon, but I’m starting to wonder if there is something up with my M:C…

Thanks. I’ll give this a try.
Edit: no change unfortunately.

I’ve found that I can upgrade the firmware via MIDI (not USB) using a MIDI interface, so I’m currently doing that. Hopefully I’ll be able to do the sound packs in the same way.

That begin to sound like a dead usb port on the model cycle :disappointed:

Well weirdly after the firmware update via the MIDI input jack, my MicroUSB cables now work! I’m puzzled as to what’s changed as the device config settings are exactly the same as they were before.

Got my Amby and Odd-Quarks soundpacks loaded now!

Hmmm … maybe a factory reset would have done it too ? Anyway you’re in business now, have fun.
