The Virus TI2 desktop made me sell all my synths

They are a big enough act that they can probably ask their agent to call up Roland, Korg, Yamaha and whoever else they like and see who offers the best sponsorship deal. They may even be playing Virus samples through Roland gear, or using Roland gear on stage to trigger a virus hidden in a rack.

I generally don’t put much stock in the gear that big name artists use for this reason. Instead look to smaller acts or the big one before they got big. They are spending their own hard earned currency with the goal of making music rather than taking money to promote gear.

That said, maybe you will have a better time with a Fantom 06. Give the Virus a try when you get it, and send it back if you don’t like it.

The 1st TI I bought was over a decade ago, excited about the total integration. It was a painful experience and a paper chase trying to find USB hardware that would cause glitches & timing nonsense. I ended up hating the thing because I’d spent so much time & money trying to get it right. The truth is they are USB1 devices & it was an idea basically way ahead of its time. I ended up selling it, but missed the synth itself.

A few years later I bought a second & promised myself I would not use the TI side of it, and it was a much more enjoyable experience. I know it inside out these days. Funnily enough the TI works fairly well on the PC I have these days but there’s still timing issues & the odd crackle, so I never use that side of it.

The only thing you can’t do on the hardware is the programmable ARP each preset can have, it’s a shame but it’s probably far too complex to be useful via the onboard display.

My advice is to forget that Virus Control exists & enjoy it for what it is, you’ll save a lot of time & frustration. The hardware interface is very well designed for the architecture & it’s a pleasure to use. You will need access to a PC/Older MACOS to burn banks to ROM though if you ever want to do that.

It’s such a fun knobby synth.

Only things I find a little less intuitive are the Oscillator workflows but it makes more sense when you realise the earlier Viruses didn’t have a 3rd OSC.

Agree 100% and using old Macbook to manage presets and synth parameters will make life easier. The ARP settings too on software easier but I plan to use Squarp Hapax and Octatrack as sequencer anyways. No worries, will post review and some tracks once I get it and have time to play with it.

Not sure where I mentioned it, could even be this thread so sorry if I repeat myself.

I hooked up the TI to a NI Maschine + and both midi as well as audio work! That might be a path forward for a semi-total integration. Virus STI. Of course no editor but the fact that I can use the TI as Masterkeyboard and play its sound into the Maschine is really nice.

I need to try my new Virus when it arrives with my Ableton Push2 controller.

That’s great! Can you see all the outputs or just main?

Hm. I believe just stereo, can check again later… and you have to also use the headphones from the TI as you cannot different in and out ports. But that is not an issue for me

Funky

I hesitate to gripe in an otherwise (mostly) positive thread, but are no other TI users besides me having terrible MIDI timing issues over DIN MIDI?

I’ve seen this mentioned on other boards a few times and unfortunately it afflicts my setup quite badly.

For example, playing 16th notes at a quick tempo (e.g. 160 bpm) with a moderately complex patch results in audibly “drunk” sounding timing on my setup.

It’s worse the more complex the patch becomes, but it doesn’t have to be anything ridiculous. For example even a monophonic bass patch, with some unison, played in single mode will sound this way on my setup.

Dropping in a similar patch on my Virus B into the same setup is rock solid

I’m not looking for specific troubleshooting really, as I’ve already tried everything and am convinced this is a bug, but is no one else noticing this? It’s a very serious problem, at least for the music I was hoping to make.

Sigh :disappointed:

So it seems like the NI Maschine+ is seeing all 6 inputs which is good. I can also hear the Maschine+ through the headphone out from the TI. But so far I am not able to select USB outputs on the TI. Have to do some research I guess. Cannot remember how that is done. I believe there was some kind of setting in the multi mode config.

I have not really experienced that but I am also using tempos of 130 max. And not too complex patches either. What box is the clock master?

Hey, was working on my studio midi recently and I noticed similar. I was using usb midi so I moved it to a tm1 I had over din and found similar. Later today I was going to try using my Cirklon midi din to see if that resolves. I was using the Mystery Island plug-in, so the Cirklon kind of complicated that, but the 1/16 note slop recorded into Ableton was kind of annoying me. I’ll follow up.

My main complaint was that they took a away the internal busses from the B-series in the TI. Would be so nice to sum a few multi parts and send them over filter, envelopes and effects of another one. Almost like having a modular. Yes, you can use the external inputs. But it is not very flexible, and only for one instance.

That‘s quite remarkable, unless the Virus works as a multi-channel USB Audio Class device, which I don‘t think it does, or it would also show up on an iPad or similar. At least one hardcore Virus fan must have been working on the software development for Maschine+.

My concerns are unfounded. Played with Virus Ti2 Darkstar and no computer just blank patch and presets and blown away at how great it sounds and really easy and fun to use! Lots to learn but massive creative tool in spite of software editor matters. Next step is to figure out how to get multiple parts sequenced on my Octatrack, BSP and Squarp Hapax. The filters and FX are top notch and massive infinite tones. I even got bass like sounds from one of my favorite bands KMFDM and some killer psytrance vibes too.

It’s so cute. You’re missing so many keys though. Enjoy…

thanks yeah it is actually bigger and heavier than I thought! Feels solid and nice keyboard and killer sound. The bass and drums are massive too.

Make sure you get registered on the Access website, there’s the latest version of the firmware if you still need to update and there’s a bunch of banks on there.

One quick trick:

Pressing (-) then quickly (+) in addition and release both goes to the start of a value
Pressing (+) then quickly (-) in addition and release both goes to the end of a value

Useful to get back to the start or end of a bank. Takes a bit to get the timing right though the first time.
