Mini documentary
Decent doc.
Nice one, thanks for sharing!
I really enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing. Not too long or deep diving into the weeds. Not everyone needs a two hour documentary. This will help spread the word. {Is that good or bad though? Who knows?} Just a great general overview of the genre’s history and timeline. I also learned about some newer Dub Techno artists I haven’t heard of before. Thanks!
inspiring stuff, thanks for sharing
i’d love to watch more docs like this related to electronic music, bonus points for experimental processes with sound
Too simplified for my taste. Basic Channel played a big part but they didn’t invent dub techno alone. At the same time there were people in Detroit and other cities producing similar music.
Youtube wants everything quick and simple. “These 2 machines are what you need to make dub techno and these 3 artists are the inventers and here are 4 steps to record an amazing dub techno record at home with no experience or style whatsoever”
You’re right. At the time, Maurizio and Basic Channel were minimal house and minimal techno. The term dub techno did not exist. The term dub techno was created after the fact and retroactively applied to MvO and ME as the originators of the sound.
I don’t see it as an argument. Just a nerdy discussion about music. Which is why i’m here. Please don’t take it personal. I understand what you replied before you changed it and can partially agree.
Maybe i take the subject a bit too serious sometimes. But music is my life and i take everything around it very serious.
I think the black artists involved in the creation of dub techno are more important than white rich guys like Moritz von Oswald. It’s what the music business always did. Take some music from black artists and let white people get rich. That’s why i might react a bit too sensitive about the topic.
And it’s not that i think the Basic Channel guys exploited black artists. There were just a few too many white people getting praised in the docu for my taste.
Hard Wax was founded in large part to bring that Detroit sound out of Detroit.
But the modern “dub techno” sound arguably was first “born” with Maurizio M series, particularly M5.
I do not recall anything coming out of Detroit that was quite like it at the time. Maybe the closest was Juan Atkins and Model 500.
The connection between Berlin and Detroit was one of deep respect and admiration. There seemed to be a lot of inspiration and influence going around and feeding both ways across the Atlantic.
Was reading this just the other day and helps paint the scene:
Yes.
It was different but they were definitely contributing to shape the sound.
Yeah Model 500 was the only project that came to mind and that particular track. Timeless classic for me.
M5
- one of my alltime favorite tracks, peak electronic music
Great read! Never heard of Vainqueur, listening to some live recording of him in Tresor, really enjoying it.
This record was written and produced by juan, mixed in Berlin by ernestus I believe, b side remix by moritz. A perfect example of Berlin and Detroit coming together
