The Joy of Soviet synth ownership

So as you all know I’ve been a bit of a Polivoks enthusiast for a while…

Saw this on eBay the other week, put in a cheeky £500 bid expecting it to go for a fair bit more and no-one else bid on it. So a little trip to Liverpool and back later and here we are…

Obviously it doesn’t really work, the top synth isn’t making any sound at all (but the LFO is working, so all is not lost…)

Thought I’d have a little look at the guts, see what we’re dealing with.

Doesn’t look too bad at all…

Except for this absolute monstrosity hanging off the back of the output jack…

Can it really be this simple?

Am I one bad solder joint away from getting a £1500+ synth for £500?

Probably not.

Find out at some point after I can be bothered to dig out my soldering iron…

In Russia, synth plays you.

Looks very tidy internally for the most part. Hopefully you can check for continuity and find it’s something that just needs reflowing, and it’s not a hyper specific part that’s gone.

Awesome, I am so happy for you :black_heart:

The other day I saw a repair video where someone went over schematics for hours (condensed, it was 45 minutes), but then he put a chip out and in again and it worked just like that. He then proceeded to deoxit all sockets. Of course in this case, there are no sockets, but sometimes it’s just oxidation or other simple stuff, like what you said about those solder joints.

(I just remembered, my Monomachine didn’t boot a few weeks ago. I opened up, disconnected everything and reconnected, worked again.)

Well worst case scenario the guy that sold it me (a legend called Gaz) gave me a number for a Soviet synth repair specialist in Wales.

I’ll probably take it to him at some point, cos the power supply hums so hard you can feel the vibration through the chassis.

Maybe that’s where the sound is supposed to come out?

I think there’s more than one Gaz.

Could be wrong though.

He lives in Bath. (Or Bristol, pretty sure its Bath)

How long did it take to get your Polivoks back from the last tech?

I’m American and have no idea what any of that means but I imagine they are very close to each other lol

Yeah Scotlan and Wales are like a 5 minute walk from each other…

But yeah Bath to Bristol, not that far. 30-40 mins by car?

Yeah, this guy should be a bit quicker.

Great synth, I have one for 10 years. And there is midi option, for both parts, organ and synth

Yeah, I’ll probably get the midi kit fitted if I take it to the specialist guy.

Although part of me kind of likes the fact there’s no midi…
