The Healthy Take Down... Sugar replacement Recommendations?

Did anybody notice that Trader Joes Turbinado raw cane sugar is all sticky clumpy now instead of dry granular?

sugar is good for you. simpler forms are better than complex ones. issues seeming to come from sugar consumption are in reality a result of poor metabolism.

Awesome point to digest. I too think that sugar has a worse rep than it maybe should have, partially because of overconsumption, partially maybe because of the level of processing it tends to be subject to in industrialised countries - and probably lifestyle (office, sitting, convenience culture etc) also plays into it.

If you have a look at eating habits of cultures that eg emerge in warm areas, there tends to be quite a bit of sugar - be that in deserts or drinks.

In Morocco for example, after meals people will drink nana mint tea, which is made with a green tea base and a brick-sized piece of sugar in a small pot :joy: - but it‘s just the right thing and gives the energy needed when the sun is hitting hard and temperatures are around 35-40C.

@OP from what I read here about your eating habits, it doesn‘t sound to me like you‘re excessive with sugar. Frosted Flakes are maybe not the greatest food for more reasons than one, so you could replace something like that with a somewhat less processed, more wholesome alternative.

Erythritol has been a great alternative for me.

just got linked this article:

studies are needed.

Sugar is bad, fructose is not an alternative. Anyone looking to cut sugars should try to like the real taste of food, It takes time but it’s a liberation.

Men are not made to eat much sugar, our body isn’t changed. Except for fruits/honey (hard to find) men had no chance to eat much carbs in nature.

While current sugar related health issues are caused by hypercaloric regimes sugars remain inerenthly bad.

Please, explain.

Which is also caused by sugar consumption.

I don’t add sugar into anything ( I’m diabetic ) but look at carb figures a lot on food, and obviously drink things full of sweeteners.( far too much )
That term ‘no added sugars’ seems to be a bit of a scam … while technically true I think people mangle it into thinking the product is sugar free.

Much of the discussion here seems to be sugar … not much about carbs which turn into sugar … plus there’s the glycemic index to confuse things even more.

Thoughts ?
Any fave sweet foods that have zero sugar and very low carbs too ?
Or this this going too off topic ?

Sweeteners aren’t good because it’s been shown that the sweet taste triggers some kind of mechanism in the brain to cause insulin spikes, ofc not like real sugar. More studies are needed btw.

Just try to eat non processed carbs or eat fibers along with processed carbs to lower the GI.

Carbs are sugar. No way a food is sweet with 0 sugar. Your only alternative are sweeteners.
Sweet foods are like drugs, once you stop (and it’s not Easy) you don’t feel the need for them.

For about 40 years I had 2 teaspoons of sugar in coffee, typically 4 cups a day, then about 5 years ago I went on the Keto diet for a while, stopped having sugar in my coffee, I got used to it way quicker than I expected, I stayed on Keto for about a year, then when I went back to a less regimented diet I never added sugar to my coffee again.

Some of the alcohol based sugars are deadly to dogs, Xylitol, Erythritol etc, so I won’t use those (plus don’t like the taste, too cool/mentholish) Aspartame gave me headaches, stevia did not taste good.

So now I do eat some sugar in chocolate, sweets, etc, but I limit my intake. I like honey in stuff like yoghurt, but obviously never heat honey, and I don’t really drink coke/energy drinks or any of that stuff, I might have the occasional regular coke in a rum though.

But yeah try to limit your intake of sweet stuff, and if you can’t completely, stick to as least processed as possible, fruit, honey, etc. Avoid chemical sweeteners and refined carbs too.

imo that is by far worse then processed sugar food, no one really talking about it but carbs are sugar and most people just don’t realize it. limiting carbs intake is as important as reducing sugary stuff. for several years I’ve sticked to baking my own sourdough and making my own pasta/pizza just to control the amount of carbs I’m taking from flour stuff. no eating flour outside of my house is a great way to control carbs, I can’t stop eating carbs as I like it but at least I’m somewhat controlling it.
carbs are present in fruit/vegetables as well, so you don’t need the extra carbs as they are terrible for you! you want flour carbs? get them at your home, get good flour, learn to make pasta, it’s easy as fuck and tastes so good! so is bread, etc.

sweet without sugar/carbs? is such food exist at all?

High Fructose Corn Syrup

I’ve eaten sourdough bread in SF (Tartine) and it was sublime, I know that the owner is a world known baker but his bakery is crazy good and quality is top notch, so I suppose it matters where you get your bakes from.
as for rice, it should be relatively easy to find imported rice, I’ve seen places in chinatown (SF) that have good rice in large sacks…

you can try replacing rice with lentils or buckwheat or similar things.

my recent approach to avoiding carbs was eating meat… i normally go for quorn/fake meat but i was in spain … much of the food was tapas/slices of thin meat/cheese. (v. good quality stuff).
back in britain its pasties, pasta, pizza, sausage rolls, sandwiches.
carbs carbs carbs.
and the more i use a freestyle libre sensor the more i think i cant eat anything nice
I’ll figure it out.
