I’ve set up a few Jazzmasters and Jags. Not well enough to feel comfortable giving much advice. I’m still shit at it. Have you checked out Mike Adams channel on YouTube? I’ve learned gobs from him.
His content is really good! I’m kinda confused about how I should set the bridge radius since the compund fretboard radius runs from 7.5 to 9 but I may have gotten ahead of myself anyways. I thought that I was closer to setting this thing up than I think that I actually am.
Would still be helpful if I can figure out the optimal bridge radius but I could probably wing it. I’ve set up a few but it takes me forever even with a set radius and I’m afraid I’ll be setting the intonation for a month if I don’t know how the bridge should be set ahead of time ![]()
Thanks for shouting out the resource!
I wonder if he’d respond to an email? I hear he’s a super nice guy IRL.
I’m not sure, maybe! He seemed pretty stressed out after he moved to seattle and went full time at the guitar bar. I think maybe he put a focus on that which is totally understandable because it looks like he hasn’t posted in about a year.
I’d feel like I was bothering him so I’ll probably just try and wing it and hope for the best. Like I said though I think I may have overestimated my progress so I might have about 1 or 6 things to do before I can really get it fully assembled and set up. Hopefully by then I can at least figure out the optimal bridge radius but I’m sure if you want the real optimal geometry it depends on nut slots and other factors that I may not be considering.
It’s not that hard with a fixed radius neck and bridge but the compound fretboard and adjustable radius to the mastery add kind of a mystery element. I’m sure it’s pretty much the same, adjust until everything plays in tune at all points on the neck, but feels like it would be easy to mess up the string height and have the outside strings too high or center too low.
Think I may just consider this instead for now, only real difference from the Fender Mustang Micro Plus is the ecosystem to me.
Some of the sounds I like already come from a couple of Boss products, the Katana Artist with the Boss MT-2W, based on the video I uploaded earlier.
That one is good. I have one.
hey @sjl2025 , here’s a little snippet of improv guitar playing from this morning into the Fender Mustang Micro recorded into my DAW via an 1/8" cable via the headphone out.
Guitar is an Epiphone Les Paul, amp sim used on the FMM is number 2 “65 Deluxe” with the Hall Reverb. A little bit of EQ applied in Logic afterwards taking out some of the lows and some sparkly highs.
Thought this might give you a good real world example of how the FMM sounds. One of my favorite guitarists is Jeff Parker, so this is me emulating his tone a bit.
Most of you would have owned a Metal Zone at some point over the last two decades. Love it or hate it, the MT-2 defined the scooped mids and processed high-gain tones cut from the cloth of metal records produced throughout the '90s.
The MT-2W reflects the progressive changes to the 21st century metal scene. Guitarists are now after tighter lows, punchier mids, dynamic gain and articulate highs, which is exactly what the MT-2W provides.
Product description had me sold here, but I’d need to pair it with the Katana Artist. That plus this would be half the price of the Quad Cortex with a sound I kinda like. I’d have to wait and see if I could achieve anything close with the Katana:GO or whatever when I get it around next week.
The first tip in here is really interesting. He got a pedal that allows you to run a mic through a guitar effects pedal and recorded his unplugged electric guitar with an SM57 and ran that into a Strymon Iridium. It’s surprising how much it sounds like an acoustic guitar and an interesting acoustic guitar at that! Somebody said that Janes Addiction used to do something similar (mic an electric and run that through an amp). Very cool. I wonder how a bass would sound.
I love the Eventide H90 pedal a game changer for my guitar and synth playing.
Does anyone have experience using a Roland JC40 for guitar? I mostly like guitar with just a touch of overdrive, so I’m not looking for a dirty amp. My main use would be to get drive from my pedalboard and have a clean platform for spacey reverb and delay. In particular, I’d like to run a stereo signal path to hear those wide delays and other 3D effects
I’ve a JC-40 on my wishlist for a couple years, but I don’t live in a place where I can use and amp these days. I know this doesn’t help you, but I’m curious as well.
I’ve only used emulations so I don’t know how valid my opinion is here, but as far as I can tell this is just about the perfect thing to do with a jazz chorus
As a little update, I ended up going with the Chroma Console over the HX effects for my first pedal and I’m having a damn blast. I can already tell I’m going to want to use this thing on a lot of stuff.
Somehow ended up in a very Black Keys if they were hired to write a 007 zinger realm here, and I’m not sure how I got here because this isn’t my usual thing. But I definitely want to refine it and take it somewhere now.
That’s fantastic. Such a vibe. Definitely needs to be a full tune
I"ve only played through a jc100 but it should be pretty similar. Forcefully direct and unforgiving are the words that come to mind. You shouldn’t be able to play that loud without an amp breaking up or displaying some character other than throat punch. Probably perfect for you but I’d listen to some dry demos before you decide.
I had the tiny and very cute JC-20 which I had to sell when we left Norway. I really liked it. I think Shigginpit summed it up nicely calling it forcefully direct! But theres a reason why the Cocteau’s and lots of shoegaze bands used them - they take pedals really nicely. I’ve ended up with Yamaha THR-30W now we moved as I just need a practice amp. I would be very tempted by the JC-40 if I was going to be playing guitar in bands though.
I haven’t used the JC-40. I have played through countless JC-120s over the years as this is the amp every guitar shop in Japan has. I love the JC amps.
I bet the JC-40 sounds good, but one question is how loud do you need? Are you playing in bands, just playing at home? I had a Roland Cube 30 back in the day and that was crazy loud (shake the windows loud for my smallish room). I imagine the JC-40 is also going to be quite loud, but it also might not be loud enough to keep up with a drummer.
Thanks to you and everyone else for the responses!
My current practice amp (a 15+ year old Cube 30) is on its way out. The amp model channel died maybe 5 years ago, so I’m left with the clean channel only. The goal is to play at home and practice with the band, so trying to get something that could swing both scenarios at least reasonably well. We aren’t a heavy metal kinda crew, so maybe the 40 is sufficient. I know the 20 would be enough for noodling but myself but it would fall woefully short in a room with other people. I probably just need to go find a shop with one in stock at this point.
