Out of curiosity, what’s the benefit of using RAW over WAV?

I see from reading that a RAW file is “unstructured” and has no metadata, but having a hard time wrapping my head around why that would be preferred over different formats.

I’ve been reviewing all my long-form field recordings in Bitwig but have only imported them as WAV.

When you record at different bit depths there seems to be some kind of stretch that happens. This avoids that. I haven’t been able to figure out another work around. It’s still a WAV file, it just doesn’t do anything to the file. I don’t need the metadata, just the headroom of 32bit so I can record loud sound sources without gain staging prior to import.

Once I process the audio and export at 24 bit, I sync it to the audio recorded on the camera (one click feature in Davinci Resolve)

Ah, I see what you mean now. In 5.1.9, I had changed the default stretch mode setting to ‘raw’ in Settings > Behavior (specifically for long samples). This let me drag in my 90m+ field recordings with no stretch. Is that no longer possible in 5.2?

You now just have to hold CTRL (Control) as you import the sample. You can also change it once loaded by clicking on the WAV file in the clip or the timeline, and then going to wherever you have your Audio Event section at and clicking the Mode dropdown:

Not a deal breaker, but for me it’s a bit weird design choice. When I’m importing my WAVs I don’t usually need a beat detection or automatic stretch. I believe I once was puzzled why some stem sounded off on import…

Yea I had to revert back to 5.19 initially because I didn’t have time to figure it out. I ended up sending a support ticket but found the answer in the changelog before they responded.

Like you said, not a dealbreaker… but I kinda wish I could have it as a default still?

Other than that, 5.2 is going great!

New control surface for Bitwig: The OXI One sequencer. It can be put in a mode where the UI is completely remote controlled by the host.

This is what I always wanted for a DAW. The piano roll controllable by hardware in a sane way. The only thing it’s lacking right now is how note length is handled.

…this is another nice one, from polarity fequently accepting the challenge to rebuilt another next famous plugin or hardware device via bitwigs grid…
this time…oxford inflator…once it was magic…and is still expensive for a code product…

ok…so far so good…next step for bitwig…5.3…or 6.0…with a limiter+ and a midi mutator, as an answer to abletons latest take on midi operators…

…oops…one of the rare things, some bitwiggers envy ableton users for…the drumbus…

…not quite that perfect as the nulling proof like on sony/oxford inflator’s…
but hey, we’re defenitly getting there, thanx to polarity…

TBH, I think there are many things Live does better than Bitwig (and visa-versa) but its good to see devices such as this being made…the deployment of ‘packaged’ MAX devices with GUIs etc makes this far more prevalent in the Live ecosystem.

Aaaargh just stumbled upon this. Having features hidden that way is rather bad UX since it’s very hard to discover. But most aspects of a software is being learned by users by exploring the UI.

I was hoping the new update would include it but nope. If you forget to hold CTRL while putting the WAV into a clip it cuts off the very end of the WAV (not always, but more often than not). So once you do go in and change it to raw you still have to expand the loop length and the WAV. Very fun when you are dragging 6+ 30min recordings :upside_down_face:

Make a sequencer to sequence polymer. Then, make tiny little sequencers that sequence this sequencer. Map these sequencers to some notes. Play as you will the sequencers that sequence the sequencer that sequence polymer, and never write midi notes with the mouse ever again.

Couple of notes/questions:

Did anyone achieve a good emulation of analog synth sounds in Bitwig without extra plugins? Maybe by using the latest filter and saturation options in 5x?
I tried Polysynth, it’s ok on lead sounds, but not on bass, etc.

And just FYI:
The 5.2 update is not running without hiccups on my laptop, so sticking to 4.latest build. If you are on older hardware, it’s time for upgrade.

It didn’t even crossed my mind to use the tablet view with a computer. I don’t know why but it’s more fun to have the devices on the top. Thanks Richie.

Why did I just discovered today that you can have multiple windows of poly grid/note grid from different tracks opened at the same time ?! Why nobody talks about this ??

I wonder if they will get the same reaction they got when they tried to sell devices after saying everything would be included in the update plan
