The best Roland TB 303 clone?!

Makes sense, thanks!

On a different note, I’ve been using the Donner B1 for a few weeks now and really enjoy it. The saturation sounds great and the added sequencer functions are solid.

This site here is dedicated to TB303 clones HW and SW and compares and ranks them, might be worth a look :

Not the best but certainly badass would be the Twisted Electrons Acid 8. It seems like they weren’t going for recreation as much as they were going for something new. Bringing the 303 somewhere new and interesting and I think they nailed it, it sounds excellent it’s easy to program and very fun to perform with

Is there a big difference between the mk2 and mk3? I love twisted elektrons!

I couldn’t say, I have the MK1 and I love it, it sounds so gnarly!

  • volca nuBass ?

not that i’m unhappy with my MB-33’s, but they don’t have MIDI control over parameters – which is highly desirable in live situation, since i’m a drummer and my hands are likely busy with that.

i know that raw nuBass sound is not that much 303-like – but as to my taste, an acid line without overdrive/distortion is a total waste of acid :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: and what i can hear from various demos – nuBass with external pedals IS there.

always was skeptical about any Volcas, but seems like this is the only option that is analog and has both right size and right amount of MIDI control.

well, i’m hopelessly damaged with roaring and screaming acid lines of classic goa trance era

The other day I was listening to early Miles Davis and thinking how great it would be to play a 303 with his delicacy. Also non-repeating melodic lines that are highly evocative and extremely memorable. Cool Acid.

Is there a 303 clone with built in delay/reverb other than the donner?

tb3, tb03, t8. At least delay I think.

Does anyone like Korg Volca NuBass?

Just picked up a T8 but haven’t unboxed yet. It has delay, reverb, overdrive, and sidechain. You can switch between a square and saw for the osc with a little menu diving.

This video (not mine) does a pretty bang up job demonstrating how powerful the T8 is.

I do! And I have all the tb clones more or less lol

Although not a clone, the Erica Synths Bassline DB-01 is my go-to TB-303 alternative.

I expect I’ll pick up a T8 when they’re casually available, but the removal of accent control really bugs me - expecially as accent is something that’s often poorly emulated in other clones (certainly the TD-3 and TB-03 struggle with it).

I love the idea of an acid box that’s this affordable and accessible - it’s pretty much everyting I wanted in the late 90s in one Altoids-sized case - but I don’t like the idea of accent tweaks being filtered out of people’s repertoires, because they’re an important part of the 303’s performance features.

It’s exacerbated somewhat by the T8 having an empty knob space right above the accent button, next to the other 303 controls.

My opinion is that it also works well in duo with a 303/clone.

Pretty sure accent control is accessed via a combo function (really need to test my own unit :man_facepalming:)

Pretty sure I saw a Roland product specialist add/control accents in a sonicstate vid and here’s a post from gearspace:

Can confirm. The only issues is that, it being an endless encoder, it’s kind of hard to “play”. You can spin on that thing for hours to go from 0–255.

Holding SHIFT makes it jump in units of 10, which actually pretty fairly approximates the range of motion on a pot, but looking at the picture above you can see it’s really awkward to hold ACCENT+SHIFT and turn the value encoder.

It doesn’t feel like the value encoder implements any sort of velocity. That could add quite a bit to the playability, and, I imagine, could be a firmware addition (though buy the gear for what it does, etc. etc.)

Also, keep in mind there are two different accent tracks, on for the drums and one for the bass. You have to have the BASS button selected to affect the 303’s accents. This tripped me up a few times when getting to know the box, I had drums muted, and was tweaking the percussion accent. I was like, “This is really subtle”. It is not subtle. Just have to have BASS selected.
