Looks very interesting. Like idea of being to easily switch between the very good standard OS and this new one.

Ah, so unlike say DOOM OS on the SP-404, which runs on top of the official OS, this completely replaces the OS with an alternate OS? Is that right? Sorry I donāt have a Move, so not familiar with how the OS works for that.
Schwung is like DoomOS where it sits on top.
Correct - the MPC Sample runs a version of linux underneath with a stock Sample application (what you might think of as the āOSā) that runs when it powers up. This runs instead of the stock application, and takes over the hardware.
Hold up this is the replacement OS for the sample, thought the sample screen douldnāt do color?.
The sample has a full color 320x240 screen! The Stock OS uses color too, just⦠mostly yellow. Will share some more screenshots and features a little later, but itās a nice screen to work in front of, despite the size.
I sold mine a while back but need to get one again to see what you been cooking now. Impressive is all I can say. Need so see the workflow but I have faith in you.
You mentioned that to return to the original OS you just need to pop out the SD card with the alternate OS. Does that mean you need to buy a new SD card to use it? It canāt go on the SD card we currently use with the Sample? Apologies if this is something you donāt want to share yet.
It can go on the SD card you already use, yes.
Thanks very much. Looking forward to seeing it in action. Good luck with the final push.
Big time. Canāt wait to see the full list of features related to sampling improvements. Flatten to pad, step sequencer, grid editor, etc. would be very welcome.
hmm that sucks⦠i guess itās now up to trying to contact Akai support?
Good olā fashion JJOS 2XL, a drum-loop & some soul music chops:
All the new mpcās have a smoorgus board of direct buttons and way more then a sample⦠there is nothing slow about them. I wish people could just be honest that they donāt want a touch screen on a mpc⦠and machine users wish the machine had a touch screen⦠![]()
I have learned to just respect peopleās wants and let them dream up big dreams!! Even if they might not really even know what it is they want, they are still important⦠and it is no question that Akai should be working on more nostalgia based machines for the next generation!!
When people talk about old MPCs and having more buttons they really mean the workflow and muscle memory from making music on these devices. Classic MPCs I could know when I pressed f1 hit note repeat, or rotated the jog wheel five clicksāwithout needing to look down at the device.
Modern MPCs are like computer DAWs nowadays , you need to be engaged visually by touch gestures, swipe menus, screen taps etc .Always have to be engaged looking at the screen which in my opinion isnāt great While the Live 3 has many buttons, the workflow and UI/UX isnāt there for me.
To each their own, but working on that MPC1k beat I just posted (even with JJOS) made me appreciate the new technology & OS even more.
I get why some people like the oldies more (thereās some features I would like), but the touchscreen doesnāt slows it down for me. What did, was the lack of the clip-matrix & how tedious it is seq music in the way I like, so I kept it simple to just what I could come up with using only 1 bank of samples - Iāll redo this beat on the Force later.
You say you donāt have to look down at the buttons, but thatās the same thing with the touchscreen - youāre eyes donāt leave the screen. You just touch what you want directly on a ever changing screen of options & opportunities.
At the end of the day, this is an argument over mode of operations & personal preference. Which leads to nowhere, but I donāt mind sharing opinions, like for me thereās too many features for it to not have a touchscreen, but we could limit the features we use on the modern units to keep it simple like with the older gear, which also have menus that you still have to via buttons. Now, we can use buttons &, or the screen. In the future itāll be our mind or a hologramā¦![]()
If anything thing I wish it had 2 touchscreen or a way to split the current 1 into different widows (when still reasonable as some things need the whole screen). Also, I think itās more constructive to find/request for way to make the touchscreen more user friendly.
The live 3 has a note repeat button⦠as well as pretty much everything a 3000 can do there is a dedicated button⦠it is the reality that it can do so much more that I think is what throws people and is too much for them to make muscle memoryā¦
I understand that but while I appreciate the modern MPCs for how much they can do. They lost the essence of the workflow which made why MPC so popular. I talk about hardware buttons and cursor keys for a reason. To put it simply the UI and buttons work so well together that itās similar to a fretboard on a guitar. You know where everything is, you donāt need to look at the screen and use your ears. MPC Sample is why itās such a hit, easy to use and understand, laid out much better than the modern equivalent and has horizontal knobs as well. Whoever thought vertical knobs should be a thing should be fired for that awful UI/ UX.
