The all things MPC Thread (Part 4)

I’ve tried that and it didn’t show up for some reason. Will investigate further, thanks for the help!

Some interesting news over at MPC Forums regarding a forthcoming new alternative OS for the MPC Sample. Those involved include Charles Vestal (Schwung for Ableton Move) and Dan the Automator (Deltron 3030, Handsome Boy Modeling School).

Said to be a year long project and estimated to be due for release around first week in November.

Woah, that sounds very promising

I’ve tried for two hours now and installed several updates, drivers etc. to both my MPC and my Mac. To no avail, it’s not showing up in Mac transfer. Are you sure this is working as you say on Mac OS as well? The MPC manual says very little to nothing about it or I just can’t find it. The MPC 3 desktop app file browser is also a confusing mess.

I’m sorry, but I use Windows, so I can’t provide specific details.
That said, the underlying system is essentially the same; when you enter Controller Mode, you can access the MPC’s memory—no special steps are required.
The Akai website does mention a couple of things that might help:

  1. They recommend using the inMusic app on your computer to download drivers, firmware, etc.
  2. The only compatible operating systems are macOS 14 Sonoma, macOS 15 Sequoia, and macOS 26 Tahoe.

You can find all the information here:
MPC Key 37 G2 | Frequently Asked Questions : Akai Professional?

Hopefully, there’s someone here who is a Mac expert; if you already have the latest firmware and drivers installed, then the issue lies on the computer side.

the MPC should show up as a drive in your Finder. You don’t need to run the MPC software, just switch the MPC to “controller mode” should be enough.

These are the steps: Akai Pro MPC Series | Transferring Content to and from the MPC via a Computer : Akai Professional

Should be as easy as that. Just for a reference, this is how simple it works on my end. The ssd in my example is the one that I added, only 2 disks will pop up if you have no added storage. And be sure to eject all disks when finished. On my Mac, it’s smart enough to suggest that by itself.

Interested to see what it’s like. I was hoping it would be sort of like JJOS, but the description over on MPC Forums says you can load instruments and VSTs, so sounds like maybe they’ve taken it in the other direction (modern MPC).

Same, pretty much where I landed with the MPC Sample was that I’d be really into the hardware if it was running a super slimmed down version of something closer to MPC1k JJOS rather than a drum track of 3.0 pretty much.

From all of the available information, this ain’t it. Like you say, looks like it’s going even further in the opposite direction.

Edit, lol the screenshot on the thread over there seems to suggest they’re gonna try putting 512 tracks in to the MPC Sample ….

Are you connecting using the usb-c port on the g2? And are you sure it’s not a USB cable issue?

That’s exactly what I did. I’ve also tried several USB-C cables and used the USB-C port. Oh well, I will try some more. Thanks everyone for helping.

Maybe check your privacy and security settings in the MacOS settings? It should be allowed to access an external device through USB. I had some security alerts pop up on my Mac the first time.

Yeah I had this problem years ago,it was just a setting there…

Vst would be similar to Ableton move schwung I guess if Charles is involved.

I don’t wanna be too negative, but I really don’t understand why people are modding the MPC Sample to have more functions. There’s a version of MPC that can pretty much be and do everything in all kinds of form factors and sizes (Live 3, Keys, One, X, Force). And then there’s the one device that’s a bit smaller and simpler as an alternative to all of these.

Because the workflow is simple and more akin to the old MPCs, it’s more tactile and more thought out in terms of layout due to the buttons and knob layout. There’s a lot of things great about it, but having a decent grid edit like JJOS would be a game changer. The VST I image are going to be like Schwung, stuff like braids.

Edited after clarification: Given that this is similar in scope to Schwung, I’ll add a little disclaimer here for anybody interested:

This upcoming project doesn’t use any AKAI IP, it’s all original code, nothing disassembled. It’s not a modification of the Sample binary, or patched content. It runs as an app on the device, just like the native interface does, and it launches through built-in means the stock system provides, no workarounds or circumvention required, just pop in an SD card.

That being said, this isn’t AKAI software, and isn’t affiliated or endorsed by them, so usual caveats of support and warranty would apply: you’re on your own, and running third party software can theoretically come with risks as you’re using it as it wasn’t intended. On the other hand, it’s completely reversible, as it is just an app running from the SD card: eject it and you’re back to stock.

Sounds cool then, thanks for explaining!

are you able to test with another external USB device/drive, and see if it pops up in your Finder?

yup, Tonverk and external hard drive work flawlessly with the same cables I’ve tried.
