The all things MPC Thread (Part 4)

Same reason why the MPC that don’t have a touch strip can’t use the crossfader in 3.X : product segmentation. It’s a marketing concern, not a technical one.

I’ve been asking myself, do I really need a DAWLESS replacement since a lot of the stuff I want to do with the XL I can also do with my Mac, especially with the plugins I use. I understand with the new pads and touch strip it’s more tactile, but would it be better for me to get the TR1000 since that can’t be easily replicated with a Mac. Yeah, so I’m in a dilemma. Yes, they are all different in many ways and it depends how I want to make music. And none is better or worse, but reading what you said about Akai making the XL better, that’s like they have created the machine that we all have dreamt about.

I don’t even think they need to look to apple. Just look to the competitor, Ableton.
If anything has automatic mapping to Ableton live, it will also immediately have the same mapping with Push Standalone. Plug and play. I was using the P3SA with the APC40MK2 for a bit and it was great. I still have both, but no longer have room on my desk for the APC, due to the MPC taking up that space. Ableton has created a cool ecosystem with Move and Push and I bet they will continue to grow it now that they have a dedicated hardware department.

I don’t care about mouse support. I rather they find a better way to edit notes using the available tools & software changes. I think it’s better to play notes in live tight as possible & edit afterwards to get it as right as possible. Editing notes isn’t bad enough for me to want to use a mouse.

Mouse support may just reinforced any poor editing os limitations. Why fix anything after adding support & if they improve the editing on the box, that would make mouse support unnecessary. I don’t want us to be in that position & this is why they should make note/data editing on the box more fluid & efficient.

I can understand that, but it’s not uncommon for manufacturers to say this works only for certain

I like to have an option myself to use or not use it. It’s clearly baked in so why not allow it?. How many years has it been since and we seen no updates to the piano roll?. The step sequencer in the L3 is a massive step forward but you’re going to have to spend a chunk of change for that to remedy something Akai clearly don’t or have inclination to improve yet.

Yes, we’re not asking them for a new feature. Is already there just blocked for users. If someone does not want to use it they’re free to not use it. Yes continue improving the workflow but at least let us have the workaround while they improve it to the point we no longer want to use the mouse. I don’t think that’s irrational or too much to ask.

Just adding it even temporarily puts us in the dilemma I was talking about. They should cut down on the time making different versions of Flavor Pro & dedicate time to improving what’s already there. If they can do both & maybe even tell us that mouse support will be a temporary feature until they get it right, then maybe it’ll work, but it can end up like my quote.

I feel the same about the Yamaha RS7000, but the Force & now the MPC make up for some of it. The RS has MIDI FX & more advanced sequencer features. The sample management sucks & is where Akai is way better.

omg I’m finally actually trying out the mpc 2 desktop software and I love it, it’s like an mpc on your desktop it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy…
forever and a day I resisted seriously paying attention to it, had it installed for like 5 min and promptly deleted it a while back, just having it on my computer bothered me but now I feel completely different about it! This is going to totally make my macbook air feel even more like the groovebox I’m using it as, like an mpc with mouse support

brooooooooos so I can just make kits, autosample to my hearts content and all that shit while just sitting anywhere with a little ole macbook dammn I’m such a luddite

It’s much better with an mpc controlling it though… I think it’s not fully usable without an mpc (might be wrong).

in what way?

I think the software was designed with the intention to be used with an mpc in controller mode, and the mouse and keyboard serve as support to the one thing you can’t do from the mpc which is open the vst guis and fast typing. I’m not sure if it’s because I have no idea how to use it without the mpc or what but it makes no sense from a user perspective.

Even despite knowing my way around it on the mpc in controller mode, I found myself missing v3. It is cool to load lots of programs and cycle the MIDI through them and all and I want that to be possible in v3… I want everything the way it is in v3 + the ability to easily do the program/MIDI thing from v2.

You can, but the are methods different:
On v2 you could load programs & they would be hidden in the program pool for the project. You pick a track & switch thru the programs.

On v3 you load programs as tracks that’s always seen cause there’s no program pool. You now have to create a empty/dummy drum track & switch thru programs via MIDI Send.

Remember you can move tracks around to keep the main track that you pick closer to the dummy track convenience.

If you use the dummy drum/MIDI track to record clips, you can switch thru the drum tracks in real-time via MIDI Send - It would be dope if it was recorded as automation.

What I like about v3 is that since nothing his hidden, I’m more selective with what I add & sometimes it may be better to put all the samples in 1 track.

Has anyone had any luck with USB recording from L3 or XL into Ableton dead on the grid (or close)?
I’ve finally started trying to track some stuff out of the MPC and the recording is quite a bit late.

Do you have to install ilok to use the software?
