You’re right.
I think these could be possible with the existing op-z, and would be amazing enhancements, but I think your other suggestions require a whole new op-z 2 / ep-z.
It’s mono sampling even if you’re using a line module and stereo input
The only beneficial stereo aspect of the line module is for having stereo input on the module track that you can add effects to and mix with the rest of the tracks.
Using the pitch pad for velocity of steps is new to me though, haven’t seen that written anywhere and doesn’t seem to work on mine. Mind detailing how this works? Is it written up anywhere in the manual?
Again, my pitch pad barely works as it is, so maybe it’s just not a noticeable effect but I can’t seem to get it to work for velocity
I think it is written somewhere in the manual…but I don’t think it works.
Spot on! This would pretty much be my wishlist for an op-z2.
You have to hold the step down that a trig is already on. I know it worked before, maybe they took the feature away? I guess I just figured the thing samples in stereo because the input is stereo… that seems kinda crazy, but I never noticed so I don’t think it really matters… nether of these are really hifi sounding samples anyway and live of not the point. Opz is super punchy and dirty. I have better samplers for that and they get used much more. Over all this thing just feels like a less capable opz to me… I’m glad people like it though. I would rather save for a used digitakt.
To change step velocity you hold the step and hit the pitch bend (left side to reduce velocity, right side to increase velocity). It works quite well, but is a slower operation than actual velocity sensitive pads.
I agree on all of these, here are things that I’d like to add:
- insert effects
- more/deeper effects
- per-track dynamics
- per-track EQ
- a better global compressor (I hate single knob compressors)
- step components, plocks and parameter automation on all tracks
- and let a man dream: something like Korg’s LogueSDK for user synth/effects
Yes, open-source synth engines would be so good.
Ahoy
I had a OP-Z, bought it right at launch day, and the build quality was very lackluster:
My unit warped, the on off switch plastic bit broke, I had loads of double presses/false presses on many buttons, and one of the encoders start to feel like there was sand inside.
I took extremely good care of the unit, sold it for cheap after a year of use.
I want to ask you if you got one recently, has anyone experienced such or was I unlucky?
I loved that thing and I want it again, I am just hoping its build quality improved with the years…
Thank you o/
(Erased my topic, figured it’s easier asking through here)
I had a pretty similar experience. I loved it but it had the shelf life of a banana.
Got one in 2020 and after a year it started double triggering and the audio out was producing distortions/clipping/clicking.
Got a replacement on warranty, which materially felt much stiffer. No double triggering so far, but the on/off knob pops out occasionally which is easy to pop back in.
Hey guys, I just found that Split Audio Adapter from DigDugDIY in a drawer. Is anyone interested in buying one?
I sold my OP-Z 2 years ago. And don’t need it anymore.
Speculation: I guess the EP-133 KO2 is running a less capable or similar processor to op-z. Does that mean we could see stereo samples on op-z in a future firmware?
My naive mind suggests we’d then just get 3 seconds sample time for synth tracks and 6 seconds sample time for drum tracks. Would be great for sampling loops in stereo and resequencing them.
so ive been jamming in 7/8 lately, using the OP-Z as my main Midi Sequencer.
And i noticed that the OP-Z actually understands the time signature it is in. if you hold in the Mixer button (index button 2) you will see a green led traversing the 16 step lane. it will actually adjust the way it counts one step to correspond with the current time signtaure. so if you have 4 bars in 7/8.
when the green led is in step 5 it will be the beginning of bar 2, when its on step 16 it will be at the end of bar 4 etc.
to do 7/8 you simply put you tracks to loop at step 7 or 14.
Really Cool !
I’m trying to get something to work here, and I’m thinking it won’t work, but I’ll ask anyway -
I got the OP-Z sequencing one of the OP-1 FIeld’s synths over bluetooth.
I route the OP-1’s audio into the OP-Z Line In module, stereo.
I apply the OP-Z’s both effect slots to the incoming audio, as well as some Tape and Master tricks. Monitoring it all from the OP-Z.
So far, so good. Love what I can do with this.
I would now like to record the results of this back onto OP-1 Field tape - while I’m playing it. As in, real time from OP-1 Field through OP-Z and back onto one of the the Field’s tape tracks.
But I can’t do this without getting horrible feedback. Which makes sense, of course. But I’m just wondering - with all the USB-C and Line Module options going on here, isn’t there a way to get this working between the two without having to add an extra unit in between? I can’t figure it out but figured I’d ask, anyway.
Plan B is to slide in the TP-7 in between, record the results onto the TP-7 and then back to the OP-1. It’s not a disaster, but it’s not as neat as having just the OP-1 and the OP-Z solving this without additional support.
pinging @MichaalHell and @darenager and @SonWu specifically, if you guys don’t know this, I guess no one does
If you mute the OP-1 track you are recording onto, you can avoid feedback, but the easiest way is to use a mixer. Do you still have the TX-6? Or did you never have one?
Still got it how will it help?
I was sure you’d be able to do it with a mixer, but I can’t work it out. The problem is that there’s no way to separate the OP-1’s output and input. It’s always going to feed back, I think.
Try the trick where you mute the track you are recording to. This means you can’t monitor the recording on the OP-1, but I assume you have your headphones plugged into the OP-Z anyway?
Also, if you have them hooked together via usb, then you get midi over the cable. Not need for Bluetooth MIDI.
You would need to record the Sequence from OP-Z onto the OP-1 tape and then play that recording through the OP-Z and record it onto a muted track on the OP-1 like @Mistercharlie mentioned… that is probably the only way
